A jury has heard that Algerian migrant Riad Bouchaker was "upset" about a social welfare refusal letter when he attempted to murder three school children in Dublin. Counsel said the evidence will prove that when he attacked the children, he intended to kill them.

Mr Finnegan said while such an intention is “rarely proved by a person announcing it”, the jury could infer his intention from the weapon he used, where he directed the blows, how often the blows were delivered and from the surrounding circumstances

He lived in Ireland for over 20 years, still requires a translator ,was never in employment, and yet was granted Irish citizenship.

The system failed this poor child and her family. Hopefully this rotten bastard spends the rest of his days locked up.
I'm a lefty liberal socialist or whatever, but if that's true ,then its fucking outrageous.

We need a citizens test, and you should need to meet a grade of english proficiency/have enough PRSI stamps to qualify.

Have said this before but learning a bit about Irish history, culture etc should be a prerequisite as part of that

On this whole "requires a translator" stuff, I was recently speaking to a garda who told me they were in court and had a Roma defendant appearing in court on a charge - the defendant asked the garda would it be OK if they went outside for a quick smoke. Garda said she was in Cork that long that the Roma lady spoke perfect english with almost a Cork accent. But when it came to the case before the judge their legal team had insisted on a translator.

Nice work if you can get it 😞
Look I know nothing of what happened but I’d imagine that day to day fluency in a language is not the same as being able to understand court proceedings in that language.

All I know is if I was in front of a judge I’d want a solicitor or barrister next to me who understands and is experienced in how the court’s process works.

Interesting. Given that he absolutely could have done so if he wished.

So he cared enough to bitch about it, but not to do anything constructive about it....

Who exactly should he have gone to and how would he prove that she could speak english if she wanted to pretend that she didn't?

Do you deny such things happen btw?

The Judge. There was an application for an interpretor. The guard is perfectly entitled to provide his evidence to the court as part of that.

A harrowing read. Probably has cost the state close to half a million Euro just to support this piece of shit in his time here. And still no English! So pay some more for a translator. For what so he could try kill toddlers! What a broken system we have here.
