Economic migrants shouldn't be here without a visa, we have a system for that. They have entered the country illegally, no need to be processed. Send them back to where the departed from immediately. Blaming processing times is a government cop out.

Under the human rights conventions we signed up to they need to have due process if they claim asylum…..now if processing is a matter of a couple of months and the law is enforced and they are deported do you really think that there will still be a load of them coming?

As far as I understand the number of Georgian asylum seekers has dropped significantly as they are on the safe list of countries as they were seen as mainly economic migrants and have faster processing times…..low and behold there’s a drop.

We have the laws but not the resources to do it so invest in that part.

The UN human rights convention, EU law and Irish law allow a person to apply for asylum whether they arrive in the country illegally or not so if you want to deny a person that right then you are going against all of that. I think that would be very divisive and would set a bad precedent especially when we have laws that if enforced seriously would help to stem the flow of asylum seekers who are economic migrants fairly quickly and I believe the speeding up of processing of safe country applicants which has come about this year has done so to a degree already.

I’d argue our international reputation would suffer greatly too.

Our economy is heavily reliant on FDI and if we start deporting legitimate asylum seekers how could Ireland be seen as welcoming of investment into the economy by foreign companies? Many of those companies employ large immigrant workforces. We’d have given into rising xenophobia.

Deporting and not allowing illegal economic migrants entry, I said it many times. Never once did I say anything about deporting legitimate asylum seekers but keep conflating

Never said it shouldn't be a fair process, I said economic migrants should be dealt with at point of entry, not some process that requires us spending billions housing them.
