Holidays.

There are no words to describe the beauty of it.
Ive been to the Matterhorn which is the next peak over - some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable.. and that crisp cold crystal-clean alpine air. Spectacular part of the world (y)

The cost of anything in the country is also spectacular just to balance things up!

One of the things on my bucket list is to travel overnight on one of those swanky trains that has sleeping quarters aboard.

Watched Portillo the other night on a train going from Sidney to Perth - the train was 750 meters long!!!! It had to be split in two for boarding in Sydney so that it could have platforms to board, and then re-attached before it set off on the 4,000 Km journey.

Of course it had what seemed like fancy dining cars too. Looked absolutely class way to travel

I'd love to travel on one of those "sleepers", leave some European capital in the evening, have a meal on board, and wake up the following morning arriving at another capital having slept in a bed.

It's truly humbling

I did the student version of that down through Italy!

Not so much a kilometre of luxury, more a sweltering tin can with rooms the size of a tiny bunk + a space down the side that wouldn't stand a Biafran! With the added problem that we were told as we boarded that italian gangs worked these trains and would spray some kind of thing that would knock you out and then rob your money while you slept.. so nighttime consisted of lying face down on top of my money pouch, trying not to sleep.. and pulling in to stations absolutely wrecked the next morning! I still remember these American girls on board who were robbed during the night

There was one cool moment where the night train drove on to the ferry and crossed to sicily, then back onto the tracks over there ad continued on

Wow. Great to hear from people who've actually done it. This is the kind of info you don't usually get in guide books.

If I'm ever going to do Italy it'll be spring or autumn - I'm not good when it gets too hot. Unfortunately, where there's a bit of money there tends to be criminals wanting to grab it. That train-ferry sounds brilliant but those gangs just put a downer on the whole prospect.

And I was hoping to visit a few of the former Yugoslavia countries but my pal's son and his mates were mugged sitting outside a bar having a pint in Slovenia - bad enough - but the follow up from bar-owner, plod, and ambulance was akin to something you'd only see in a third rate mafia film.

Say what you will about ze germans or the brits but that kind of carry on isn't tolerated.

I'll really have to sit down and plan my over-all train adventure. Retirement is on the horizon
