Gurriers - "Come And See"

Just to move this out of the Fontaines DC thread.

The album gets better and better with each listen. There's way more nuance to it than the singles like "Approachable" and "Des Goblins" would suggest.

"Prayers" goes in for that early '80s post-punk sound. A lot of people (including myself) have made the Fontaines DC or Idles comparison but there's a lot more going on here - early U2/Simple Minds/Bunnymen/Magazine.

It absolutely destroys the new Fontaines DC record too.

Something about the Fontaines just doesn't sit right with me, and I can't put my finger on it.

I should really like them, I do like them, but they don't add up to the sum of their parts or something.

Will give this a listen. I have heard the singles but nothing else.

I didn't warm to them until I watched their Glastonbury set from a couple of years ago. And since then I have grown to really like the first 3 albums. The new one, however, is shite, as Crispy mentioned. They need to piss off for a while and take a break. I like my bands to disappear for a while. They never stop. Album, tour, album, repeat.

Looking forward to the Gurriers gig in a couple of weeks. I saw them support Slowdive last year and was impressed.

Think Fontaines are class ,first listen to gurriers have to say sounds like fontaines tribute band without their songs ,must take another listen or two .

Influx of shouty lead frontmen, guitarists come off a conveyor belt. Strat hung up high, naff barnet & tash. Dressed like a tinker.
In my opinion this music won’t age very well.

Some of this music will be forgotten quickly, that is the nature of the zeitgeist and is true of every musical movement. I can't see Wet Leg having another good go at it, same with The Chats and even Idles have lost something. There is some enduring quality out there - including this Gurriers record, The Murder Capital, Melts, Soft Play, Turnstile - to name a few.

I agree with the clothes, shit haircuts and 'taches - a lot of new punk band members look like Jim from "Friday Night Dinner".

I'll certainly give the album a few spins, the last track is killer. Much prefer that style of signing than shouty. But FFS to them, lot of talent in Ireland.

Gurriers were on top form last Friday. Dan Hoff's voice was a bit blown out but that's to be expected come the end of the tour. Their energy and commitment was never in question from start to finish though (apart from the drummer stopping mid-set and nipping off to the jacks for a slash :lol!: ).

The place was lifting during tracks like "Dipping Out", "Des Goblins", "No More Photos", the new one "Dissolve" and "Approachable".

Great engagement from the band towards the assembled crowd too.

I have never seen a pit in Coughlan's before, it was wild and mad to see but it's definitely not the right room for it - especially when people don't understand the rules. If someone falls, pick them up. There was one young fella in there who was looking to hurt people, more specifically he was trying to hurt girls/women - elbows up going in, throwing his head back to try and catch someone in their face. Langball.

There was also one tosser who talked loudly about "The Dark Knight Rises" during half the set. Even after several of us told him to shut up. Dickhead.

The support, I Dreamed I Dream, were absolutely terrible. I've seen them 3 times now and never enjoyed a minute of them. The line-change hasn't helped either, the guitarist that appears to have left was the most talented member of the group.

Coughlan's is a great venue and we're lucky to have it but they need to sort out their times, they are rarely accurate. Doors were supposed to be at 8pm. Didn't open them til after half eight. Support didn't get on until well after nine with Gurriers not getting up til just after 10pm.

I genuinely can't understand why Cork venues have an issue with posting stage times (beyond selling you more booze). I've been going to gigs for over 30 years, I do my best to go see the support bands as well as the main act but standing in venues with a pint, looking at an empty stage, has become a no-no.

Life is too short.

They haven't announced her leaving anway, and I'm pretty sure she was with them in Dingle at the weekend. I've seen them a few timestoo, and although initialy impressed, I've become less so each time since.
