most peeps in pubs just want what they know already, i.e. 'the hits'

100%. The lad that I know didn't pick up the sticks because he wanted to play The Chicken Dance as punnets of sausages and chips get handed around.
(I mean, he might have but he idolised Topper Headon, Stephen Morris and Hugo Burnham when we were growing up so I doubt it.)
But - now in his late-40s - he still derives some pleasure from getting the kit out (especially if he's asked for a few decent tunes) and he gets some serious payola for it.
