GAA and the AFL problem

Obviously this is a problem now, particularly in the womens game.

The AFL are actually scouting young GAA players in Ireland.

But what can the GAA actually do about it? Anything they do is essentially stopping an elite sportsperson from making a living.

Obviously it's not great to see these players going to Australia, but I don't see how it can be stopped.

Any suggestions?

outside of paying the players I don't think there is any real action which can be taken

They can talk about protocols, and about fairness and appeal to the jersey but unless a player is under contract they are free to do as they please.

Heard of a possible proposal where gaa players will be forced to join afl teams on category A contract as opposed to a cat B which is what is being used at the moment, category b allows teams to pay players outside of the salary cap so they virtually have free reign on gaa players currently and take on as many as they want.

That's grand until a VFL club sets itself up as a feeder club for Irish players.

Sign a bunch of young fellas for 200 quid a game and a promise of a contract. They are no longer being directly recruited from the GAA and give them al the Cat B contracts in the world.

it's not a bad idea but selfish interests of agents, clubs and players will find a way to bypass it no matter what the GAA Say because outside of good will they have no real leverage.

the aussie rules league i played in was awful för getting “guns” in from oz för the summer, give them a handy job in a bar and pay their rent för three months. we had a cap of three aussies on the field and five in the squad.

the poor old aussies got the shock of their lives when we had eight paddies on our team 😂😂😂
