Future Cork Hurlers

Following the post mortem at work after the All Ireland final defeat, lads were discussing underage club players who will hopefully be future All Ireland winners.
My kids are too young yet so I'm not at all familiar with the standard of Rebel Og or under age hurling, the lads feel the future talent is going to come from Muskerry rather than East or City, they mentioned a couple of young lads but to be honest I've forgotten their names..

Ben Cunningham and Michael Mullins of Whitechurch would be two, I think to bolt through next season. Daire Connery was supposed to be sharp for Na P. He is another. There are some very good young players around to be fair.

I’d be hesitant in naming any children publicly. I don’t see any benefit in it.
There is a massive step up from just minor to U20 for any young lad.
And then another even bigger step from U20 to senior inter county.

I was very impressed with the u20 full back who should have been sent off v Offaly in the final last year, Kingston?

Amazing how people never grasp the magnitude of that step up.
Also the step up from club hurling in Cork to IC
You are right there is no benefit.
I actually saw some one mentioned a keeper after one performance.
Funny stuff

Those 'few seasons' Daire Connery wasn't up to it physically but I saw him last year and thought he had developed a lot in that regard although he was still injured I believe. I think he would prosper under the current style with his fast hands delivering ball to a 3 man inside line. The posession style with players deep and everything been run through the lines along with a 2 man full-forward line would not suit Daire Connery, and along with him requiring physical development as well as avoiding injuries he wasn't going to make it under Kieran Kingston's tenure, I would certainly look at him again and believe the current style in the Cork team would suit him far greater. In other words he is a player suited to the current Cork hurling style which is the closest we've had in a long while to the style of the past, which won the county at least 28 out of 30 AI titles.

Micheal Mullins certainly has to be involved and William Buckley is in a similar category and if I was Pat Ryan & Co. I would be also looking at Shane Kingston and Cillian Tobin. I expect Ben Cunningham to be thereabouts next year but not starting, I think there's a couple of years required in his development and firstly his work rate needs to improve. Jack Leahy is similar in this regard and I believe him and Diarmuid Healy are also a couple of years away.

I'm hearing Tom Hanley and Colin O'Brien will be Cork based next year and they are certainly worth looking at in the winter, plenty raw aggression and physique in them guys and we will just have to see is their hurling up to the required standard.

The management have to be more definitive in playing guys such as Tommy O'Connell and Brian Roche. For me O'Connell has to start as he brings fire with flare and no little hurling. Roche is a player with more negative ability and like his brother Eoin I would try him corner-back at some stage in next years league, although Eoin, Cillian Tobin and maybe Kingston could be a solid cover for Eoin Downey. I see the mid sector of the team set in stone and I don't see Brian Roche breaking in there so I would look at him corner-back as I've stated on here before.

It will be interesting to see will Robbie Cotter, Shane O'Regan and Cian Barrett continue to do so well in their respective championships to merit closer examination by the Cork management and a promotion to the official 26 as far as Cotter is concerned. A player who deserved a call-up a few years back is Simon Kennefick so his performances at Senior A should be under scrutiny to see is he worthy of a call.

Players are highly unlikely to come from nowhere to make the panel. I’m far more interested in the likes of Mullins and Cunningham pushing on than looking at players who’ve been tried before and were not up to it.
