Former cork Bookies

Which is why there are much stricter regulations in place, and big fines for any operator who isn't acting with due diligence these days compared to say five years ago.

The horror stories of people losing fortunes will possibly continue, but they should be more and more historic rather than recent.

A sensibly regulated and legal online market is ok.

If people have their finances in order and aren't taking in substantial amounts of money from every Tom, Dick and Harry, then they have little to fear.
🤔
"If people have their finances in order", loads don't so a quick, easy bet seems like a solution thereby putting them deeper in debt.
It's still a temptation for too many people imho Clou.

I know it's not the same but there's a (completely free if you want it to be) online game I play called Casino RPG. It's kinda like the old Farmville style games, where you build up your casino empire, putting in the machines, gaming tables, decorating the casino, buying up new properties, etc.

Thing is there's all the "casino" games in it, including bingo, and poker against other people. And playing them is how you get the bankroll to build your empire. The community is the really cool part of it. A lot of people from around the world, usually older people and quite a few retired people. They can be good fun, very friendly, and it's nice to chat to people if you have the free time to do it. https://casinorpg.com/

I play the slots in it, just keeping them rolling over in the background as I'm working at the PC. Others play poker, others bingo, etc. And there'd be in-game parties, and the like. A lot of people play it on tablets, where it's supposed to be great while you're watching the telly, or something.

Like I said, not the same as actual gaming machines, or the bingo in the bookies, but I've been fascinated by gambling, racing and casinos since I was a smallie and this scratches some of the itch for me. Shur, wasn't the first book I got out of the adult library when I got my membership around age 11 a book about a group of IT, physics and maths professors in the 60s or 70s, who wanted to beat the casinos at roulette and tried to build a small computer (hidden in the heels of their shoes) that could have the rotation of the wheel and speed of the ball indicated to it and it'd tell you which sector to bet on. Like I said, fascinated by all that stuff.

Sure, but the point is that the betting operators have more pressure on them than ever to protect themselves and the punter. There have been some huge fines handed down in recent years against operators not complying.

The wild west days are over.

People are still getting into unnecessary debt debt through. Phone apps are a killer, both for gambling and ordering junk food!😉

I'm sure it's very blurred, but there has to be a level of personal responsibility.

Taking these things away from people just to protect those who can't control themselves is nanny state.
Gambling serves no social function, largely. If you're down the pub every day at least you're getting out, and talking to people. Sure it'll eventually kill you but the people are real, the conviviality is real, the connection is real. It's why so many people are against fellas knocking back cans at home, alone (although this is changing with the likes of Discord, and voice chats with pals around the world.)

If you're going to the races and getting out with a gang of people it's one thing. If you're staring at a TV getting hotheaded that a faller brought your horse down, tearing up betting slips, or worse, doubling down and chasing losses with ever increasing bets on hunches and "tips" through an app you're not really getting anything out of it. You're certainly not getting rich if that's your approach.

Shur, didn't we already have some fucking moron in the thread take the piss for someone betting less than twenty quid. What bullshit! Fucking weirdo masculine bravado in the face of someone managing their finances and gambling responsibly, as is proper, and can be enjoyable. That kind of talk is manna to Paddy Power, who are far from living in a desert and in need of more money.

It doesn't have to be like that. That's the worst case scenario. There are many different types of punter in between the two scenarios you paint there, and it doesn't all have to be depressing.

It also doesn't have to be a social function. Sports punting is a game of skill and can be a personal thing as much as a social thing.

One person's Sudoku can be another's figuring out if something is overpriced at Ludlow.

One of my earliest memories of been in a bookies was the 1984 derby when El Gran Senor the hot favourite was cantering three furlongs
out but was beaten by Secreto, I think Eddery was on the favourite
I remember it well I had a huge bet on El Gran Senor I swore never again after that . I don’t know how long it lasted
