Fergie stirs it up

What the fuck do any of you care what he says about the city of Liverpool and Liverpudlians?

I'm sure Rooney will be extremely offended and rightly so, but what do you lot care?

Its not like he's having a go at Cork.

i think if you follow liverpool or man united or any regional club in particular, say go over there a few times of the year, then obviously you will have an affinity with the people and the place. if your old rival(fergie in this case) then has a dig at you, i can see why people from cork or ireland would take sides. this is not the case with london clubs because london is just too massive, it encompasses a lot more than just football. my old man is a huge newcastle fan, goes over several times a year, thinks the people are salt of the earth, always has a good time there. is is not natural that he should see himself as some sort of honorary geordie when it comes to following englsih football. just because he's irish does that limit him from having more passion for that football club than someone from newcastle

Ferguson has always hated Liverpool Philby. When asked what his greatest achievement was in football,he said it was knocking Liverpool off there fucking perch.its obviously eating him alive that Rafa won the European Cup in his first season at LFC,and he has only managed one win in 19 years,

Ferguson praised Benitez for winning the Champions League. He was the first manager to visit Houllier in hospital when he was seriously ill. He congratulated Liverpool when they beat United in the 2003 League Cup Final. He does a lot of good work helping managers when they're sacked, need advice, having problems etc. He has a lot of coaching and managerial friends who speak very highly of him. Take a look at Arsene Wenger who claimed in 2003 when United won the league that Arsenal were the best side and is constantly moaning. By the way he was the one when Liverpool got to the final who tried to ridicule that. As for Benitez hes clearly a very good manager but he'll need to try and do well in the league now, one Champions League win isn't going to be legendary if he srtuggles to break into the top 3 in the league in the coming years.

Of course it does. How could he?
How could he come anywhere near to the passion that a geordie feels for Newcastle United or what a scouser feels for Everton or Liverpool? Its in their blood.

That aside, feeling passion towards a football team is one thing but taking offense when someone insults the town of that football team is crazy carry on.

It might be overlooked in Ireland this so called passion towards English clubs but its not in England. This 'we' and 'us' by Irish people thinking they have some sort of affinity to an English club because they watched them on TV since they were a kid or have the odd trip to a home game. The English people laugh them out of the place, some take offense.
This is because of the attitude of the Irish towards the English on a whole. Mind you, I'm not calling them feckin' angels by any means. I'm just saying I tend to agree with them on this point.

My attitude towards English football has changed entirely since I moved to England. Its just put things in perspective.

there of plenty of irish people who have more passion for these clubs than the people who live there, how can you say that irish people who spend a small fortune supporting english clubs(however farcical you think this is) have less passion than a scouser or manc just because they happened to be born there. i'm sure you have a la carte supporters in every city following every team maybe going to 7 or 8 games a year, being from somewhere doesn't necessarily instill a passion for its football team, its more to do with an individual persons personality. lots of people on this board went to the european cup finals of 99 and 2005, i'm sure being from cork didn't hinder the experience.

i'm not trying to get stuck in you here your commets just lead me to believe that you have only a passing interest in united as your the place of your birth seems to forbid you getting too worked up about it

It seems to be my attitude of late. I won't disagree with you. I watch United and will take in a few games this year. I talk about them as the English team I support but I have taken a large step back from it all.
I know your not nit picking. I'm just trying to point out how it is seen by people in England and they've just made me see how ridiculous it all really is.
The irony smacks you in the face. How can Irish people go on about passion and love for English clubs yet effectively still harbour alot of hate towards England? That is the question I have been asked over and over and I can't give a logical answer.
A Dublin lad was slated, had the complete piss taken out of him, in my local the other day during the Pool United match. He was extremely loud and shouting 'we' this and 'us' that. A couple of hard core Brighton fans went to town on him.

i have to agree with this too, fergie has mellowed in the last few years and was gentlemanly and gracious in his dealings with benitez, mourinho last year.

wenger seems just bitter and jealous

the things is, sport isn't logical, trying to analyse it in such a way is impossible. thats why i can scream abuse at the gooch and hope he does well when they play the aussies. i'd be screaming for dara o se to lamp one on barry hall or whoever but be horrified when he does it to nick murphy
