Youths charge at gardaí with slash hooks during feud

By Liam Heylin
Youths armed with slash-hooks and machetes were among a group of 100 people gathered at a housing estate in Cork during a violent feud in the early hours of yesterday morning, as bottles and stones were thrown at gardaí.
Garda Paul Cogan at Cork District Court yesterday said the incident, which arose out of a feud between two families, lasted for more than three hours between 10pm on Wednesday and 1.20am yesterday.

“This was a serious public order incident with upwards of 100 people gathered at Annalee Grove in Mayfield. A number of youths were armed with machetes and slash-hooks,” said the garda.

“Gardaí sustained attacks from youths throwing stones and bottles. Youths charged at gardaí with slash-hooks and machetes at one stage. 30 gardaí were present at the scene.”

Dean Madden, aged 23, of 30 Lagan Grove, Mayfield, was before Cork District Court on charges of producing a slash-hook in the course of a fight with persons unknown and engaging in drunken and threatening behaviour.

Garda Hogan objected to bail because of Madden’s alleged part in the serious incident and his belief that if Madden was granted bail he would engage in further serious incidents.

Madden said through his solicitor, Frank Buttimer, that he was present at the end of the incident but he denied having a slash-hook.

Judge Con O’Leary granted Madden bail following assurances he would move out of the Mayfield area and reside at Santa Maria, Ballyadam, Carrigtwohill and other conditions.

The judge put the case back for a week at Cork District Court.

Later yesterday evening, a father and three sons were arrested and brought before the court which heard how tensions had escalated arising out of a dispute going on for the past few days in the Mayfield area.

Danny Quilligan, aged 43, of 6 Annalee Grove, Mayfield, and his three sons, Jason, aged 18, Alan, aged 21, and Daniel, aged 22, were charged with various counts arising out of the incident.
