Doyle in the Irish Squad

from Sky Sports News

Reading striker Kevin Doyle has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for the World Cup qualifiers with Cyprus and Switzerland on October 8 and 12 respectively.

The double-header promises a tense finale to qualification from Group Four with Ireland one of four sides hoping to claim their place in next year's World Cup in Germany.

A first international call-up caps an excellent start to the season for Doyle, who has scored three goals for Championship side Reading since moving from Cork in the summer

"I've watched Kevin at various levels including for the Under-21s and I have seen him this season for Reading," said manager Brian Kerr.

"He has maintained a high level of performance and I am obviously serious about bringing him in.

"We don't have too many centre forwards in the squad, and as to whether he plays, I will see how he does in the next couple of matches for Reading."

Wigan striker David Connolly has also been recalled for the first time since 2003 by Kerr who must prepare for the match against Cyprus without suspended duo Clinton Morrison and Andy Reid.

The full squad:

Shay Given (Newcastle), Paddy Kenny (Sheffield United), Nick Colgan (Barnsley); Kenny Cunningham (Birmingham), Gary Breen (Sunderland), Andy O'Brien (Portsmouth), Richard Dunne (Manchester City), Stephen Carr (Newcastle), Ian Harte (Levante); Steven Reid (Blackburn), John O'Shea, Liam Miller (both Manchester United), Steve Finnan (Liverpool), Andy Reid (Tottenham), Matt Holland (Charlton), Kevin Kilbane (Everton), Graham Kavanagh (Wigan); David Connolly (Wigan), Damien Duff (Chelsea), Gary Doherty (Norwich), Stephen Elliott (Sunderland), Kevin Doyle (Reading), Robbie Keane (Tottenham), Clinton Morrison (Crystal Palace).

good result for Doyler, highly questionable whether he'll be able to make the step up tho. A summer sans Ireland in major competition methinks

Would you have thought he would have settled in the Championship so quickly?

Maybe Kerr is trying to put the frighteners on Robbie Keane.

That's 3 potential rivals for his place (not counting Duff).

Saw Doyle in the U21 game in Turner's Cross and he didn't do much.
Mind you Ireland were totally outclassed so he didn't see a lot of the ball anyway.

What about McGeady???

McGeady can't get in the Celtic side so I wouldn't want to see him plying his trade for Ireland. Something has gone to that bhoys head though I don't know what. When Stephen Pearson can come back after 6 months injury and command a starting place ahead of you then there is something amiss. Still, he's only 19 so plenty of time for him to shine. It's not a matter of Strachan not playing the youth cos Maloney, McManus and Beattie are all playing regularly.
