Digital ID - UK

Useless cunts.

Government’s One Login System Loses Key Security Certification

June 9, 2025
The credibility of the UK government’s flagship digital identity system, Gov.uk One Login, has come under renewed scrutiny after it lost its certification under the Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF). The loss of certification occurred when iProov, the supplier responsible for One Login’s biometric authentication, allowed its own DIATF compliance to lapse. As a result, One Login was automatically removed from the official register of accredited digital identity services, raising questions about its suitability for critical public services.

One Login is already used by millions to access over 50 government services and is set to underpin the forthcoming Gov.uk Wallet, which will hold digital versions of official documents such as driving licences. However, the system’s removal from the DIATF list casts doubt on its reliability and trustworthiness, especially as the government prepares to expand its role in digital identity verification.

This latest setback follows previous criticism over One Login’s security and data protection practices:

  • The Cabinet Office and National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have repeatedly warned of “serious data protection failings” and “severe shortcomings” in information security, with risks including data breaches and identity theft.
  • Internal whistleblowers have highlighted unresolved vulnerabilities, including inadequate risk assessments, insufficient security personnel, and insecure administration practices.
  • Security assessments revealed that privileged access to One Login could be compromised without detection, exposing sensitive personal data and system code to potential attackers.
  • Despite claims of improvement, the system still only meets 21 out of 39 outcomes in the NCSC’s Cyber Assessment Framework, far short of full compliance for a critical national service.
The government maintains that One Login meets high standards and is working towards recertification, but the repeated lapses and ongoing security concerns have prompted calls for greater transparency and accountability. As Liberal Democrat digital spokesman Tim Clement-Jones put it, “How is the government’s flagship digital identity system failing to meet standards so badly, given that it is expected to shortly form an essential part of our immigration controls?”.

With the system’s credibility coming into doubt, and its future role in public service delivery at stake, pressure is mounting on ministers to address the underlying issues within a cornerstone of the UK’s digital infrastructure.

FFS.

The fundamental problem is their pay is wildly out of kilter with industry.
As an example:

£160k is nowhere near the amount of money that a competent CIO would be able to command, you can barely get a good data architect for that sort of money in London. Double it and you're starting to get into the right range of salaries for anyone good.

You'll get someone who will fulfil the job criteria but they'll be a very, very long way from the best in the business.

Yeah, say on paper I make much more than the PM.

Alas, I don't have the expenses system, second gaff, or the ability to broker sweet deals for the likes of Greensill capital later.

It isn't then okay, to let's say, limit all public sector employees in the same way because the PM's salary looks artificially modest, especially when it comes to things like this, where a fuck up could shut down the country.

The HSE offered something like €100k for a CTO a few years back, same shit, nobody applied, because it's an all consuming job, and the net pay wouldn't justify the sacrifice.

I recognise these look like big numbers, but in the UK you're in tax trap territory there, and certainly not "rich".

Exactly.

I've had people hired off my teams by the likes of Google and HSBC for twice that. Unfortunately, it was more like the standard football manager vs star player relationship... But anyway, you're going for a League 1 leader at that price.

You don't need it if you don't work.

Of course, if you're on the auld benefits, they already know your inside leg measurements and favourite sex position.
And if you drive, your movements are recorded on CCTV about every 2-3 minutes if you're in an urban area.

Google or Apple probably knows more about your health status than you do.

Having an ID that unifies the absolute mess of IDs in the UK isn't exactly Gestapo behaviour.
It will take some power away from tech companies though, as companies offer services based on the government ID instead of Google or Facebook. Which means plenty money will be spent lobbying against it.
Mission creep already in Labour's ID plans, including "rolling it out" for 13yos. Maybe they expect 13yos to be out working, which is the motivation for bringing this ( they have allowed illegal immigration to fester and then propose a draconian solution). The notion that "ah well, Google or Facebook know a lot about you already" is whataboutery. Those corporations know sweet nothing about many people and those that they do give the information voluntarily. And, frankly, you could have more trust in those organisations than you could have in a vengeful or intrusive political body.

Work is the main use case but not the only one. It'd be nuts to expect it to be restricted to just that. After all, all employees need a national insurance number anyway, it's just not a proper ID scheme (and is linked to your health and welfare data by default)

Besides 14 year olds are allowed to work.

Heard Heir Starmer say 1 billion Indians all voluntarily took up digital ID. Lies, without it they were fucked ,locked out of everything , couldn't even use the sim cards in their phones, very insidious man , Heir Starmer.
