Digital ID - UK

Well, ask Soundy and we might very well be the German Reich prior to 1945.

Well given that you're politically in bed with the blueshirts ........😜

I've seen quite a few people on line from the north who say they're Irish (which is recognised under an international agreement) and will NOT be taking any British ID card. As such it could be interesting to see how it would work in the north - which of course is not strictly speaking Britain 😜

I wonder if such a card would be the hill Starmer wants to politically die on?

I reckon it's just more distraction politics m8.

I don't see this coming in.

The UK will find a new and wonderful way to fuck this up.

here's a snippet of the shite you may need here to function day to day.

The best bit.

NONE of it, NONE of it is connected, because the people in Whitehall are useless bastards.

Even if it was connected, NI is so far behind that they wouldn't adopt it.

I guarantee you, the new id, will have a brand new, overcomplicated format, that has no connection to any of the above.

To get a phone here with an O2/3/Vodafone contract or sim card, you need a bank account, to get a bank account, you need an NI number and phone number, to get an NI number you need bank statements proving you're not a drain on society.

This is nothing more than a government wanking license.

I'm sure HBB will show up here, and say it's not so bad, and I rate him as a poster, but he's wrong.
As shite as most things in the UK are, Gov UK's processes are pretty decent and straight forward

There's a few missing there, such as gov.uk One Login and various council logins, my council seems to have different login profiles for paying for green bin collection, parking permits and paying vehicle fines

The new digital only system for parking permits resulted in my using the latter for the first time. Bastards.

Anyway, the whole point on none of it being connected is exactly what this should be used to solve, because you can guarantee everyone has one.

There's a pretty esoteric technical point here is that what they're creating is an ID system, which should just cover authentication, i.e. you are who the system says you are.
How that connects to authorisation, i.e. you're allowed to use a particular service, should be down to the service provider.

You have it with Google or Facebook ID, you can use that to enter your credentials and details but Facebook and Google have absolutely no say about what you're allowed to do once you're into the system.

I would be certain that at launch, it doesn't work with those systems, but they eventually ad it as a login option and a few years down the line, remove alternatives.

Been working quite a bit with Scandinavian customers over the past few years, they're very keen on their electronic ID, but that again can be provided by different suppliers: https://www.norge.no/en/digital-citizen/electronic-id

In Norway, there's a single e-ID system, and within that there's a bunch of profiles, e.g. you can use MinID which is the absolute bare minimum of detail. Or use BankID which gives access to public services, connected to your bank account.

I'm in favour of a single system that can be used as the basis of it all but as you say, chances are it'll cost tens of billions, suffer from horrendous scope creep and end up a political disaster.

They're part of the National Insurance system, which is possibly one of the best alternatives and honestly, I don't know why they're not just using that. you're allocated one at birth and all immigrants should have one.

If this comes in to force in the UK, it will be very bad news for us considering we have an open and unchecked border with them. The illegals will only go one way.

I really do not know what is the issue people have with being identified, I mean, we all carry around mobile phones and if anyone seriously wanted to find out who someone else is, well its not too difficult.
The UK digital ID will be compulsory for all citizens if you own a smartphone. You voluntarily give information to private companies, who tend not to hand it on to government authorities (witness the recent Apple case in the UK). If you are unhappy with your relationship with a private company, you can switch your business elsewhere. That won't be an option for a UK citizen facing a singular government, in this case Herr Starmer's. The pretext is that it will stop illegal immigration ( it'll have no effect) but already the Home Secretary is scoping out other uses. Yours is a naive take. Now, show me your papers.

You don't need it if you don't work.

Of course, if you're on the auld benefits, they already know your inside leg measurements and favourite sex position.
And if you drive, your movements are recorded on CCTV about every 2-3 minutes if you're in an urban area.

Google or Apple probably knows more about your health status than you do.

Having an ID that unifies the absolute mess of IDs in the UK isn't exactly Gestapo behaviour.
It will take some power away from tech companies though, as companies offer services based on the government ID instead of Google or Facebook. Which means plenty money will be spent lobbying against it.
