The retractable bollards are needed. If something like this happens it should also be possible to dirvert the traffic in minutes but we don't seem to be able to organise that. Instead we get 4 hour tailbacks while we wait
I know the guy driving the van who was also taken to hospital. He is fine but some scare to get.
Guards said he fell asleep at the wheel probably due to drink.

No problem having them retractable (for occasional use) as long as they satisfy their primary role - which is to ensure that they don't permit cars to cross into the on-coming carriageway and relative speeds of 160 kph impacts (is the speed limit in the tunnel 80kph?).


Perfect storm of a traffic pileup at the tunnel, town being very busy with dignatories being ferried to and from UCC, and most gardai having to hang around on foot in security details for said dignatories.

Well the plastic ones wont do. I cant imagine a tube in a tube not being able to counteract this structurally. The moment would not be huge relative to the size of the bollard. If its an artic then a wall wont stop it...

Think this incident could be a first of its type in Ireland
As in first in an accidental scenario,
Was told today it was a guy not an ol doll and he got a banger

It was a man driving the landcruiser. The woman was in the red car that got hit. She was taken to hospital along with the man driving the van

Well, an emergency service guy told me the land cruiser driver was over the limit and fell asleep at the wheel. He actually knows the driver personally.
I saw that reference to a banger of FB earlier, its not correct

I saw a 261 Opel vehicle broke down just before the Kinsale Road Roundabout this evening, it looked like it was there a while, an AA van was behind it with it's lights flashing.

I'm guessing that it (the Opel car) will have to be removed by a pickup truck.

If that was my car I'd be raging tbh, I'm not sure of the model but it was a SUV crossover type shape.

Passed that at around 6:45 myself only just having let an ambulance car pass with it's sirens going half a minute before. Thankfully it didn't look like anyone injured.

Buddy of mine has a 251 Tucson that has been back in the garage with the main dealer who he bought it brand new from 4 times with the exact same problem in the last 6 months. They've told him they've gotten a software patch on a couple of occasions but the EMS problem is persisting. Needless to say he's not a happy bunny but he's getting zero satisfaction from them.

Cork City and environs car dealerships running a cartel as far as I'm concerned. I bought a car recently up the country and got the same car with lower mileage for 1K less (32K rather than 33K) than I could get it in Cork. Check Carzone or Cars.ie and cars in Cork are generally dearer than their equivalent in Limerick, Wahfud, Dublin etc. We're being ripped off.
