Yeah no reason to have a train line to a town within commuting distance of Cork and little island in one of the highest growth regions in the country.

I've got to say that as much as I am in favour of these things it strikes me as a serious oversight. Youghal is crying out for investment and this would naturally follow house building and an increase in the population down there. If it had a train connection to the city you could really have the best of both worlds there as it could be an amazing coastal town - look at the likes of Dungarvan for a similar sized town with a greenway etc. and is thriving. Youghal could offer everything Dungarvan has but have a direct link to Cork as well.

I posted a picture on that old photos thread, it was of a train departing Albert Quay train station back in 1961, the evening train to Bantry.

Meanwhile probably at around the same time there was another train over in Kent Station, heading to Youghal.

Just imagine the developments on both sides leading to those both places on opposite sides of the County if those lines were still operating.

I am convinced that a reopened line to Youghal would have a massive benefit on it and the stops along the way, like Mogeely and Killeagh.
While they are doing it though, they may as well double track it, rather than having to redo that Midleton line now.

On my bicycle this morning stopped at a traffic light and a nice women walking her dog said "a cyclist that obeys the traffic light". Looks like cyclists have a bad rep. Glad I can change people's perspective,some of us do obey the lights.

The population of Youghal has barely budged over the past few years, so its nowhere near the highest growth region in the county, nevermind the country.
There are lots of other places one should target first, the most obvious being the new stations in Monard, Blarney, Tivolli and Dunkettle.

Sure, maybe in 10-20 years one could look at it again, but right now, priority should be elsewhere.

As to my points, fuck all people would use it. Why do I know this?
Because there is plenty of capacity on the Middelton line, which is a far far bigger town. So why would a smaller town than Youghal be more successful?

Yes the population of Youghal with it transport options has not changed much.
However the east Cork area has absolutely mushroomed over the last 50 years.
Carringtwohill and Midleton being the two obvious examples but the whole area beyond as well. In fact the only reason it hasn't been even bigger growth is the lack of a railline and no bypass on villages killing the commute by road option.
However a train line would make Youghal a viable commuter hub and would also grow the villages of Mogeely and Killeagh.

It's not an either or situation. There are over 150000 people immigrating into Ireland yearly looking for housing now. Cork is rapidly expanding. We can develop the north Cork line as well.
In 20 years the problems will be worse and the solutions more difficult.
