Great game. Both teams showed a lot of heart but also a lack of composure at times, which is to be expected as this level. I guess the big difference was that when Clare lost composure, there was usually still plenty of cover in their defence. We sort of did the usual Cork thing in a close game of committing a load of players into the opposition's half and leaving our defence wide open. Not sure there was any real reason to take such a big risk, and commit so many players into the opposition's half, when the game was so close.
I think Furlong deserved the U20 gig based on coaching a Cork team to an All-Ireland minor title, and he has gotten a lot of work rate out of this team. But they’ve also shown a real inability to react to what’s happening on the pitch, and that should rule them out of the senior job for the moment. I still can’t believe they could watch O’Connor being so on top for two games in a row and not make a single change.
Fair play to Clare. They were the better team and had clearly worked on their weaknesses more than we had on ours.'They brought their half-forward line much deeper, which made it easier for their defenders to work possession out. A lot of those Clare players will go on to play for their seniors, I’d imagine. O'Connor is exactly the type of player their senior team needs, and all of their defenders are highly rated. On the Cork side, O'Flynn, Johnny Murphy, and Ben Walsh look like guys worth investing in along with Barry Walsh obviously.
