Cork U20 hurlers 2026

Good to see a number of last year’s minor players already making the step up. I assume Garde will be in the mix as well.

It’s an interesting team on paper. There are a lot of solid defenders and quick, exciting forwards, but it may be lacking a few tall ball-winners up front. I had hoped last year that Hallahan might be involved, but the lad has been very unlucky with injuries this season and last. Other interesting ball-winners in the forwards from the last few years’ minor teams include J Twohig (Valley Rovers), L Murphy (Barryroe), and Donovan (Fermoy). Does anyone know if any of them are involved?

A very young team indeed, there are 9 of 2025 minor team,5 of the 2024 minors and 16 from 2023 that make up the 30.It is a great example of how different coaches view different players.Clearly,Furlong ,Cusack and co do not see what John Meyler saw at minor.Mark O'Brien started for the 20s in some championship games last year and failed to make the final 30 this year.He will have a chance again in 2027.4/5 of last years minors,(Garde,Deane ,O'Sullivan) are still only 17,turning 18 in the second half of the year.Definitely an example of "if they are old enough, they are good enough".
This team is loaded with good forwards but are still struggling to find the right combination in the full back line.

I was a bit surprised with some of the omissions & inclusions tbh. Maybe some fellas are injured or whatever. If that is the actual 30 I can't see them going far tbh.

Anyone in particular you felt should be in? I'm surprised Mark O'Brien isn't in there, given that he saw game time last year and if nothing else would be a great option off the bench.

They held trials for 80/90 players and like all selection processes, every player got their chance. It just goes to show that minor is really only the beginning of the journey. Those who stand still and don't progress rapidly are found out at the next stage ,u20.Matthew Barrett is a case in point. He never played minor for Cork and is now set to be a two year u20.
I would give them a great chance come championship.Tipp are ,obviously, the team to beat but underage players are notoriously inconsistent.Furlong,Cusack,Hoggy,Niall Mc and Tadgh Og will have them well prepared, have no fear of that.Look at Tipp senior panel ,currently, being too young is not a limiting factor.

No offence but the trials were a joke, I saw one that was 12 a side with zero interest shown by anyone on the line. Felt like a box ticking exercise. I'd be stunned if they won it. Nothing to do with Furlong or selection, I just don't think they have the players.

I'm a little surprised you think Tipp are the team to beat. Afaics, they will have lost most of last year's team, and while they have some very talented players from the 2024 minors, I would make Clare favourites in Munster. They will have most of last year's team who pushed Tipp v close in the Munster final, they have a proven management team under whom they've always been competitive, and they won the minor AI in 2023. Cork probably have as good a chance as anyone else in Munster.

To all that I'd add the obvious caveat that underage is notoriously hard to predict.
