Cork U20 Footballers 2025

Have to agree. We used to be kingpins at underage in both codes, now we're thrilled if we give a mediocre Kerry team a good game.At least we have recovered our status somewhat in the hurling but football remains a black spot unfortunately.
Spot on.
The standard in underage hurling has dropped across the country though, which has helped us. Fellas won’t like reading this but it’s true.

this Munster u20 final was not sub standard it was a top quaility final...two very good teams....its still turns our stomach all these losses to Kerry in all grades ..
But i believe Cork football is improving accross the board ....lots of hard work going on to insure this will continue the graph going up
We have lots of very good players ....Fair play to Ray Keane and his managment they had a number of top players missing Niall O Shea, Sean O Leary, Trevor Kiely, Dylan Harrington , Dara Sheedy all would be starters in by book....
Keane is correct when he says the big thing now how many of these lads will continue on to Senior ...
We are getting there ...i firmly believe that .
but we have suffered a lot in football agains Kerry more so ...but it will make our next victory over them all the sweeter ! its coming !

Kerry u20s comfortable win against Tyrone in the end 21 to 1-10. Shows how close Cork were to winning it all out having beat kerry once and being so close in the other game

That’s not true in the slightest.
I played cork minor in an era when cork were regularly winning and the size, skill and speed nowadays are way more advanced.

We used do laps after laps of the tunnels in the pairc, have a puck around, play a match and then get a fried 1/2 chicken with chips for dinner after.

We played limerick in the finsl of an u15 tournament and they had initialled tracksuits, physios, isotonic drinks, stats men the lot.

We’d to buy our own socks and shorts and had old adult sized Barry’s tea jerseys that we weren’t allowed swap with willing opposition for fear of the CB dinosaurs getting a stroke.

Cork neglected the underage for years thinking we’d always have the players and that farna, mon, colmans or the vocational county team would unearth them. Corkness or some bullshit.

Other counties stole a march on us by 10-15 years and we’re only recovering now.

I’ve been a bit cynical of Tyrone’s long standing underage successes. I think they have industrialised the tactical approach to the game at underage levels above and beyond what anyone else has done, which gives them more success but which perhaps hampers player development and gives a misleading picture of the quality of player coming through.

I have to disagree with you and agree with JBS on the dropping of standards and also Cork are still not in reality mode when it comes to underage. County Board/Rebel Og have appointed guys over our current county underage teams who have previously failed as managers and selectors of previous county underage teams. Once that occurs there is no facing up to reality by the powers that be, and changing the diet, focusing greater on S&C, more trainers and physios doesn't count for much if the bread and butter of preparing teams is not evident.

The game has changed to rucks, throwing the sliotar, a total ignoring of the 3rd man tackle rule, playing with a tennis ball type sliotar and therefore is faster at every level which increases the trainers, S&C experts and physios who are dealing with a newer breed of player who seldom has done any manual labour in their lives and get injured far more easily and too often, which has fueled the fitness training business where many with ample time sees the opportunity to become affluent. Tell me what skills are more advanced, the drop-shot when a player is bottled up is gone out of the game (do you remember Brian Corcoran's drop-shot goal in Croker, there's no ground hurling or over head striking ala John Fenton, Ger Mac and JBM, no coach would even contemplate showing a player those skills.

Also it was long after the Barry's Tea jerseys when a Cork underage selector told me about the players having to hand back polo shirts to the CB when they were given to them just to wear on the bus journey when going to play Kilkenny. To think the selectors who came after him are back involved now is a major backward step.

Don't forget our powers that be in Cork brought in a rule that 18 year old's can only play junior with their clubs which stifles development for U-20 level. The new Ballyhea/Milford amalgamation at underage are not allowed play Premier 2 Minor hurling this year by the same powers although they played Minor A as separate clubs last year, another restriction against development and there are other amalgamations treated the same. At least Ballyhea/Milford should be tested v Mallow who currently have 2 Cork minor starters.
