Maybe we’ve different definitions of starting out with Rebel Óg. I took that to mean 12-14 year olds. Most club players retire in mid to late 30s.What’s the average retirement age in your world?
We aren’t talking about the average club player here, we are talking about the elite players that progressed through Rebel Og.Maybe we’ve different definitions of starting out with Rebel Óg. I took that to mean 12-14 year olds. Most club players retire in mid to late 30s.
But sure that’s always been the case and now more so than ever with minor at U17. The difference in standard between minor and senior club is massive never mind at inter county level. We aren’t talking about the average club player here, we are talking about the elite players that progressed through Rebel Og.
It’s only the exceptional of the elite players play into their mid 30s with Cork.
The average club playing age is 23 nationally.
I don’t know if people here did the local viral trend during Covid. Go on to the Cork GAA website archive and look at the Cork minor teams from 5,10,15,20, 25, 30 years ago and see how many of them continued to play with Cork.
I read last year that Kerry’s five in a row minor team from 2018, that 3 of the starting 15 from the All Ireland had yet to even play adult championship football with their clubs 1st team.
They were referring to the S&C programme for players involved with Development Squads IIRCThis is the 15th season of Rebel Og.
Players are now coming towards retiring that would have started with Rebel Og.
In that conference they must have been talking about something else. Maybe the first cycle of minors under Counihans 5 year plan?![]()
The system worked v Clare in sixmilebridge and the management put a lot into it even going so far as to bringing the team up there to train, an issue that isn't making the bridge too popular in Clare.Lad, they weren’t thrown together 6 weeks ago, they are together for the last 6 months. What the fcuk were they doing for the first 5?
We had a game plan against Clare in the first round that was more for the coaches benefit than the teams. Thankfully someone in the group saw the wood from the trees and the system changed slowly with each game until we finally played proper hurling against Clare in the semi final, a game we were very unlucky to lose.
Imagine if we trained that way for 6 months?

They met a Tipperary team on the rebound. The Cork management clearly improved them but despite that their sideline antics are over the top. If they were just disputing calls you could just about say its emotion but when you are actively trying to engage with opposition players, Smashing sideline flags and demanding cards for young lads for anything other than serious dirt is shit behaviour. I was standing 20 ms from furlong in the bridge when he was shouting at Fred hegarty as he was going to pick the ball for frees . Poor stuff.
@JimmyBarrySmurphjust in case you miss any of my posts
That's a very fair point tbf.R & B while your one of Donal og biggest critics, im going back a bit to ask what was your opinion on the shambles that occurred in waterford when P Ryan had 12 months to prepare the team
Pat Ryan is the manager of the senior team. Donal Og Cusack is the coach of the Under 20s. 2 completely different rolesR & B while your one of Donal og biggest critics, im going back a bit to ask what was your opinion on the shambles that occurred in waterford when P Ryan had 12 months to prepare the team
