Cork Minor Hurlers 2026

The previous Limerick "golden generation" who won 3 U21 AIs in a row at turn of century never delivered either, albeit by all accounts a fairly "social" post training routine by the group when they moved on to senior didn't help!

However, although underage success is no guarantee of senior success, senior success is rarely achieved without underage titles preceding it. Same applies in football - Tyrone's great team of the 2000s built on AI winning u21 teams of 2000 and 2001 and the successful AI minor teams that fed into them.
The link between underage and senior particularly evident for Cork in both codes.

Kilkenny with only one underage title in last decade now feeling the lack of success at underage at senior level.
So many things have to come together for senior success... and while success and winning habits are great- getting multiple games at any underage group is massive. 6 games for Cork this year is a decent return.

The way I see it as developmental teams there are two major things you want from minor panels in the following order of importance.

1. That they will go back to their clubs and be a positive influence
2. 3 or more fellas who might go on to be part of a Cork senior panel some day

There are other things as well of course, but if any setup ticks those two boxes they're doing fine.

Fair point albeit winning senior AIs seem to have very strong correlation to actually winning underage titles, especially for Cork.

In football, our great team of the late 1980s was preceded by 3 in a row U21 from 1984 to 1986.
We got over the line in 1973 after u21 titles in 1970 and 1971 and in 2010 after u21 wins in 2007 and 2009.

Likewise in hurling. Even our famous "donkeys don't win derbies" 1990 team had few of the 1985 minor/1988 u21 team on board.
Our last senior famine 1954-1966, was matched by minor famine 1951-1964.

On the Limerick minor Team, there best Midfielder Nelligan is from Charleville, his Dad is from and played with Kilmallock,
