I would say the most important measure of success at this level is bringing through good prospects for the U20s and hopefully further. On that score last year's minors look very promising. It's too early to say either way about this year's bunch, but playing so many matches will provide invaluable experience.
Success breeds success. The reality is that underage teams that have won All-Irelands are much more likely to bring through players than those that haven't. To pretend otherwise is delusional.
As a general rule that may well be true, but it admits of a lot of exceptions. In particular, the changes in ages means it's harder to predict which players will come through, and the introduction of back doors and round robins mean that young players can get much more from a season where they are competitive without winning an AI.

On that note Tipp unfortunately look to be in a prime position for a good chunk of these lads to be brought into the senior team. Lot of lads on the Tipp team at the end of their careers and a few others who aren’t certainties to be playing either.
Minor is no longer and real indicator of which players will progress further at inter county level.
These young lads at minor are probably six years away yet from playing senior.
Yes, I'd much rather be reaching the semis than winning the competition. Some very strange thinking on this thread.
Six years is far too long but typical in Cork as the transformation is generally too slow and the rule that an 18 year old is only allowed play at junior club level is ridiculous. However it's good to see Barry Walsh, Jason Rabbitte and Aaron Niland all doing well at senior inter-county and we might see some of the Clare U-20's in the AI series next Saturday week.
