Cork Metro

M8, this thread is about the Cork light rail network. And specifically why it's never going to happen.

Building endless miles of cycle infrastructure without an accompanying light rail network is only one aspect of this shitshow.

Where you go cycling is of no concern to me.

You fanny
The light rail won't happen for many reasons, not least of which is the groundswell of opposition by homeowners and business interests discommoded by the plans.

When there was a proposal to put a dedicated bus lane on the Wilton road, which would have involved taking a slice off the front gardens of houses on that road, there was a major campaign of opposition, which was ultimately successful.

I think the plans are too ambitious and therefore will face multiple obstacles.

You need to get over your obsession with cycle lanes if you want to be taken seriously as a commentator on the local transport infrastructure scene m8.

Think of successful opposition by residents to the potential loss of a strip of their garden even for a busy Luas which would facilitate the efficient movement of thousands of commuters every hour.

Now think of the potential opposition to perhaps doubling the size of the strip of land to be lost in order to accommodate cycle lanes as well, in order to accommodate a very occasional cyclist as well.

Sadly they're prepared to bypass planning laws to house economic migrants but large infrastructure projects have to take their chances.

The bus connects plan was dreadful anyway. Just a fig leaf for Ryan to enact his loopy cycling spending.

I think a connection to the airport should be included given the expected growth of the city over the next 15 to 20 years.
Should be reasonably straightforward as I don't think many residential houses would be affected if it ran along the existing airport road.
Dublin airport is a disaster with no rail connection to the city.

When they did another briefing about this in 2023, it was said the main route was Mahon to DeCollig and could be extended to the airport and Carrigaline in later years

Layout is all wrong, don’t understand the loop in ballincollig without touching the business park areas
7-5 is a weird one. They are talking about the need to service an ever growing population. Am going to assume there's big plans afoot to develop the green area between Bishopstown and Ballincollig.

Always thought the obvious route out of City would be along the Carrigrohane straight out to EMC.
