Cork life centre

I would hope that Don came to realise the GFA was worth it. He did so much for young people and the peace process in the North has saved thousands of lives.
GFA was only worth it to a minority
Working class areas left behind
Shinners detested by the working class youth of Bogside
Shantallow Galliagh,Creggan , Rosemount,Brandywell
And that’s only Drrry city

Poor Don looked a shell of his former self in that photo.

Glad that politicians recognised the hard selfless work he did, and that serving a prison sentence and paying your debt to society doesn't have to mark you as one who can't contribute to society subsequently.

Giant of a man and fair dues to whoever set up the Book of Condolence, Don O'Leary should have been made a Freeman of Cork imho in acknowledgement of, and thanks for, his great work
He decided to get a job after his release .
He decided to do it in this sector.
He did his job to the best of his ability.
No need to go on about someone doing their job well.
A lot of people do their job well and don't expect to get the freedom of the city.

My daughter went to Bik's funeral and met dozens of volunteers who did serious jail time. Now have nothing...runners and jeans and dole.Men who fought the war.
Fucking disgrace.
What do you think should be done for them, and who should do it?

No offence but they never did
Army told SF what to do,
After the GFA the tail wagged the dog

Post GFA, when the people of this country voted in overwhelming numbers then SF rather than the IRA call the shots. Just don’t tell the beauts here who claim the now defunct Army Council call the shots.

This country as a whole imho owes a huge debt of gratitude to those who sacrificed life, limb, and liberty to the cause of Irish Freedom!

But with the greatest of respect to them all, it’s the democratically expressed wishes of the people of Ireland that must take precedence.

The People’s specific vote on an issue trumps any decision of any Army Council imho. Otherwise you’re just exchanging one tyranny for another.

The people want the Good Friday Agreement (something that would never have been offered without the huge sacrifice of Republican men and women imho) and that has to be it, whether it’s our ideal or not.

I’d love the Brits gone long ago (better they never came) but it didn’t happen. But even loyalists see it now as inevitable.
But it’s that Irish men and women of 32 counties get to decide their own fate. Even if it’s an FFG-DUP coalition running the country, it’ll be the choice of the majority of Irish people!

Give them pensions like they did here . Old IRA pension.
The Beaurue of Military History gives an account of the people who applied for pensions. A vague account of what the applicants did during the struggle.
We did maneuvers we did training we kept watching the RIC and the Army. we did eplosives training
No one admitted killing anyone. Even though lots were killed
A complete fudge.
Good man I am awarding you a pension.
Next man come in ........

There are accounts online about who did what in the war of independence…things got vague about Civil War as subsequently nobody wanted to admit anything in public domaine…Lot of National Army soldiers who lost their lives during civil war, surviving families had to go through wringer to get anything from Devs Bunch..

Lots including my grandfather had extreme issues ref his pension as not alone did he serve and fight as a volunteer
He was imprisoned in wormswood scrubs .
And other prisons afterwards as he took the proper ( anti treaty side) during the civil war and devs government also f up his pension until 2 years before he died,
And in fact until I started digging and posting literature etc to the military archives ppl he wasn’t on their lists ,
Thankfully after a long wait that’s being sorted before the end of the year .

I'd say it was common enough - my own grandfather never got his IRA pension, turned down despite him having active service, he had the medal alright but not the dollars!
