I’m not suggesting that any of these players are better hurlers than the current forwards, but there are some players in the club championship who are arguably harder-working, and definitely more physical than the current Cork forwards. Aaron Myers is a ball-winner who works hard and he’s been very consistent for Sars over the last few years. Tadhg Deasy can also win his own ball and at his best could have something different to offer in my opinion. Shane O’Regan has had his issues but he is well capable of working hard and winning his own ball. Colin O’Brien showed that he is capable of working hard under Pat Ryan and again offers a physical presence. If you combined those 4 with Daniel Kearney and Brian Roche in a Cork forward line, I’d be confident we’d be winning more high-balls, breaking balls and have a harder-working forward line.
Some fair questions could be raised about whether individually, their hurling is good enough for inter-county, or in fact, anywhere near as good as the current Cork forward line, but in the areas of ball-winning ability, work-rate and physicality, I think they would offer more than the current forward-line. Again, I wouldn’t be in favour of those 6 forwards starting and I think we need to combine the current forwards with some of them, but something has to change.
At the moment we are one of the nicest team in the country to play and it all starts in the forward line. I’m sure the likes of Diarmuid Byrne and Kyle Hayes look forward to facing off against Cork as they will be given space and time in possession. We need to find hurlers in the Cork forward line who will get under their skin and challenge them physically. Becoming a team where work-rate and physicality is non-negotiable, especially in the forward-line, would be a good starting point for next season.
