Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Don't see how Cork and anyone else can beat Limerick at the level they reached yesterday. We were devoured between the two forties, annihilated. Cork better than the scoreline? Yes, but Limerick have upped it, figured Cork out, worked their socks off to disrupt, make messy the second possession ball that Cork need to set the attack, no time, harassed all over.

Like demons. All first half, Cork players surrounded in midfield. Limerick took the risk of unmarked players elsewhere but their attitude was no way is that ball getting out clean.

Frenzied stuff. If we weren't talking about an amateur sport in lovely catholic ireland, you'd nearly wonder what was in the Limerick gatorade.

Tom morrissey got 1 point vs tipp and 3 vs Waterford, yesterday he got 5….who was he marking? When he went off his man came on and scored 2, he got one himself and hit a couple of lovely passes, he is a poor defender at this level and has been targeted and exposed match after match, he wouldn’t get near limericks 26 and the way they are defending he would t make tipps half back line.
He is a lovely player and perhaps a role like Adam English as a foil to Tim, but to say he was our best player when as a half back he was taken for 7 points…..Morrissey was highest limerick scorer from play ffs
well this thread said morrissey was past it and even more after the tipp game so cork prob thought he was no threat. The lad who came on peter casey. One player you don’t want to see coming on to a tired defense or one that has been dismantled.

As sheedy once said limerick are not depending on anyone. If lynch is quiet somebody else with pick up. Same with hegarty and morrissey. Putting out fires all over the place as shefflin said in his last Galway game in charge

Limerick were savage yesterday giving an awesome display, no two ways about it. They absolutely tore into Cork and showed exactly why they’ve been the top dogs for the last decade. As I said last week and it was clear from the warm up that this game was a must-win for them. You could tell they were going to do everything possible to not let Cork beat them three years in a row in Championship so handy. They came full strength with real intent and a well thought out game plan.
But here’s the thing for me: in doing so, they showed their full hand. Their setup, tactics, match-ups were all laid out in broad daylight in the Gaelic Grounds for us all. Limerick had to win yesterday, so they didn’t hold back and Kinnerk threw the entire book at it I think.
That might actually suit Cork in the long run.

This wasn’t a knockout championship game, it was a battle for positioning between the 2 favorites for the All Ireland. If (or more likely when) they meet again later in the summer, Cork will have got a much better read on what Limericks set up will be. You could argue we will have learned more from that loss than from scraping a win yesterday.

Obviously, it’s a disaster to get hammered, in the short term at least, but if Cork use the data and footage wisely and adjust their approach, it could work in their favour down the line. To me it is the ultimate hammer the hammer, their number 6 had to be the target. Better to get a wake-up call now than another demolition in Croke Park next July.
I’d actually love to be around Corks backroom team this week and over the coming weeks plotting our redemption and an ambush.
Long way to go yet.
