Cork Hurlers - Part 2

This is worse then those, 21 we were haunted to get there and no where near ready, 96 that was a hardened limerick team and cork had young lads like Sean og, Joe Deane, the rock just starting out……yesterday was utterly destructive and disastrous…..this is a team fully prepared, having got to a final last year, having had a management in place on year 3 with a raft of very experienced players and they were utterly blown out of it.
Yesterday was a debacle, unprepared, unready, sub par…..coming out after and saying we learned you need players 100% right for a match of this magnitude shows how utterly unprepared they were.
Yesterday destroyed any notion that this team will win an all Ireland certainly this year and longer possibly

82 v Kilkenny, we were bullied out of it. Early 1st half Prendergast, first ball into Tony,
he took Tony ball and all !!

Cork were raging hot favourites after Cork had demolished Waterford by 30 odd points.

I think JBM announced his retirement or maybe it was after the 82 final.

Can't be giving up 7 points from play and the freedom of the pitch as a defender to your man.

Can't be giving up 7 points from play and the freedom of the pitch as a defender to your man.
If you watch the game back you will see he won a good few puck outs , scored himself and many of the points conceded (and scored by his men) were from turnovers given away by Twomey and O’Mahony . I don’t see him being dropped but stranger things have happened in a crisis

Madness here dropping Mark Coleman - the one player who actually showed up yesterday with some fire in the belly .
We have an all star full back in Downey and midfielder in Dara Fitz. Downey isn’t moving anywhere and Dara should be moved to midfield .
O’Connell is not in the pecking order and has not featured much in any of the games so I doubt we will see him here unfortunately
Tom morrissey got 1 point vs tipp and 3 vs Waterford, yesterday he got 5….who was he marking? When he went off his man came on and scored 2, he got one himself and hit a couple of lovely passes, he is a poor defender at this level and has been targeted and exposed match after match, he wouldn’t get near limericks 26 and the way they are defending he would t make tipps half back line.
He is a lovely player and perhaps a role like Adam English as a foil to Tim, but to say he was our best player when as a half back he was taken for 7 points…..Morrissey was highest limerick scorer from play ffs

One interesting way of looking at yesterday's game is that Limerick scored exactly the same as when Cork beat them in PuC last summer: 3-26.

Basically the same score for Limerick again this year but they just nulled all of Cork attacking options and kept them to a pitiful 1-16.

That's some improvement for their defence given it was more or less the same Cork attack..
It was definitely "less" the same Cork attack.
No Dalton, Harnedy not 100% fit and playing only 1 half.
That's about a 5 point minus straight away.

I'd question Connolly's fitness as well cos he deffo looked to be limping in second half.
That'd be around a 2 point minus.

I'd therefore attribute around a 7 point minus to injury/fitness issues.
Given that we scored a total of 2-12 less than we scored v them in PuC last year that still leaves a 2-5 minus to explain.

For me that rests with what happened with Fitzy and Barrett, and is the major issue, and the biggest unexplained difference between our attack yesterday and last year.
Did Limerick take them out of the game?
Did they both have one off nightmare days?
Are they both in a dip in form?
Two of them accounted for 10 points (1-7) in PuC and 0-6 in AI SF.

Not too worried about B Hayes as I think he just looked for that one pass too many on a few occasions when he could have taken a shot on himself.
He was at least getting on ball.
Hoggie was Hoggie - no major difference from the games last year bar being on the long range frees, which in hindsight was not the best strategy.

ah stop lads ffs, it's never a red card.

the pen is definitely harsh - I think limerick fans would acknowledge that happens 20 times a game but all the other stuff is minutiae.
He jerked his head back grabbing into his face mask. It’s a red card by the book. It wouldn’t bother me if it weren’t for another soft BS penalty call.

Lads, I said it in the run up to the game, you have to win the war before you can win the match, we were neither set up or tuned in enough to win a battle

There will need to be a reaction this week, firstly in the team announcement and secondly on the pitch if we are to stay in championship

I’m not baying for anyone’s blood but there has to be changes and the right changes

Ger Millerick has to come in to the full back line, possibly Damien too. Eoin Downey to move to the corner and play the roving role

Cormac O Brien has to start at 7, Rob at 6 and Joyce at 5. That’s our best half backline

Tommy to come in midfield to partner Tim, we need Tommys aggression and workrate and in my opinion he has been totally underused this championship

If Dalton and Seamie are fit they start on the wings, if one is out start Robbie or Duds. Both if needs be. Darragh at 11 but by fuck he has to up the gears big time

Inside is the tricky one, they have been devestating all year but were found wanting last Sunday. I’d move Shane Barrett inside and leave Hoggy or Connolly on the line, or both. A statement has to be made here. I’d also strongly consider Robbie in the corner if Dalton and Seamie are fit

PCollins
SODonoghue, GMillerick, EDowney
CJoyce, RDowney, COBrien
TOConnell TOMahony
DDalton DFitzgibbon SHarnedy
ROFlynn BHayes SBarrett
Sunday is not about making a "statement".
It's about knowing exactly who can hold their nerves, reach their top level, bringing the attitude, doggedness, drive and energy needed to win the game.
It's about knowing who have been the reliable, proven 8 out of 10 performer since February .
If management can't make up a 15 based on the above, they're entering into gambling territory.

If there are enforced changes due to replacing players carrying injury that's a lot of change already.
The notion that the team should be ripped up with unenforced changes in personnel and positions, for a knockout game v Waterford, is not too wise IMO.
