Cork Hurlers - Part 2

This match could easily be a draw or a win for either side but Limerick are at home, they have a stronger bench, they have a revenge motivating factor and their management have been more pro-active to address their team's weaknesses from last year. Cork management have been too conservative and the transfer of players from successful U-20 teams to the seniors has simply been too slow. A two point win for Limerick but hopefully I'm wrong.

It’s a pretty harsh critique of management considering they won the league in 2nd gear and haven’t lost a game in Munster yet. Had the injuries not happened we would see more youth. They did happen. Who should’ve been replaced? Meade? Who else?

If you throw that criticism at Cork management don’t you need to comment on Limerick naming a team that, bar about 3 names, could be from 2018?

Epic game in store tomorrow. Atmosphere will be something else. Of course either team can lose and still progress but there’s so much more in this - it’s a massive chance for Cork to put the foot on the throat and make a statement in their back yard. Massive chance for Limerick to top the group and make themselves top dog again.

In the last couple of months we’ve shown the potential to be a really special side - the first half in Ennis was everything we know these players are capable of… and of course we’ve shown the chinks are still there at the same time - discipline, full back line, questionable in-game decisions from our line.

Tomorrow those chinks will be exposed as problems or areas we’ve learnt from and sorted. Our 4 and 7 is where Limerick will ask the most questions and I hope the lads can respond in kind. Both teams know what eachother is going to do, how they play and set-up - don’t see any surprises there but that doesn’t mean you can stop it.

Reidy goes roaming, NOL goes with him. 2v2 in our full back line and our MO is to just take that head on and try and win every ball. ED vs O’Brien I’m confident on, less so SOD v Gillane but let’s see. 2 sitting centre backs might cancel eachother out with Twomey tracking Cian Lynch and WOD keeping tabs on Darragh but it’s never as simple as that as both half forward lines rotate an awful lot.

I’m glad O’Neill doesn’t start for them, and that Barrett starts for us but I think we could do with bringing a big moment scorer off the bench like a Hoggy or a Connolly (not saying either of those 2 specific players don’t deserve their starting position, more examples) and starting a tackle machine like Roche… instead of the other way around.

While Limerick have a proper set of aggressive defenders, a brilliant puc-out, obvious impact off the bench… I can’t forget the roasting the cork forwards gave them in Croke park last year and I think those forwards as a unit have got better. We need to show we’ve gone up a gear from last year and we need to show that tomorrow.

Liam Gordon is a great shout to ref - he’ll be understated and leave off the small stuff hopefully. Buckle up.

I have a feeling O’Flynn is about to become that big moment scorer off the bench.

Fascinating to see how the limerick full back line cope against corks electric full forwards. Dan Morrissey return will give more confidence to casey and finn.
