Cork Hurlers - Part 2

I dunno R&B I think our recent record in Croke Park makes for grim reading.
Since 2010 I think our inter county record reads
Played 14, Won 4 Drew 1 Lost 9

Our club record reads
JR played 7 Won 3 Lost 4
Inter played 6 Won 3 Lost 3
Sr played 1 Won 0 Lost 1

Lot of those inter county games were games where for one reason or another the Cork team completely failed to fire
In particularly I'm thinking V Tipp 2014, V KK 2019 or V Limerick 2021.
All true Vlad but this group of players are different, their mentality is different, and what happened Cork teams in the last decade has no bearing on their thinking. Now of course one could say they have won fuck all either and that is true but I think the next few years will change all that

I think it will change as well, whatever about getting beaten, I just find it very demoralising seeing Cork or Cork teams turn up to Croker in particular and not perform anywhere near their ability.

As sickening as the loss to Clare was last July I can accept it because Cork died with their boots on. The loss to Limerick in 2021 or Kilkenny in 2019 drove me cracked and still do when I think of them.

My young fellas first time seeing Cork win in Croke Park was his 7th match there and first time in 70 minutes was his 9th. These are consecutive appearances by Cork between 2013-2021, his first match was the drawn 2013 final and finally saw a win in 2021 semi. That's grim.

I think those defeats had more to do with the personnel and the occasion than with the location. We defeated Limerick in an almighty game up there we weren't complaining then.

I don't think matches from a decade ago have any relevance to the current intercounty players, tbh. The 2021 final did, but I'd say that particular demon was exorcised last summer.

Likewise as regards club matches. Between them Cork's club finalists over the past two seasons (five different clubs) might have four or five lads on the league panel, and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if none of those players saw game time come championship.

More generally, for most if not all of the last fifteen years (and more) Cork haven't had enough really good hurlers to count as the best team the country, or even as among the best teams. That, much more than any alleged Croke Park factor, was what needed to be improved. It also largely explains Cork's bad record there in that period.

People are v quick to look for patterns in results. A decade ago posters on here were bemoaning Cork's poor record in finals (AI, Munster and league) since 2006. Cork then won three Munster finals in the next five seasons. The issue imo was nothing to do with Cork having some block when it came to playing in finals, but largely with not being good enough (plus specific factors in certain matches, eg, Sean Og missing the replay Vs Waterford in 2010).
