Cork Hurlers - Part 2

the conservatism and comfort that ementates from cork hurling is so evident in this forum and particular any discussion about who will start for cork next year. Cork failed again this year even if they were close, there were clear evident problems with the defence and the use of subs in particular and these areas need to be addressed for cork to compete next year, without focusing on particular players but it was evident that a more ruthles management would have made changes in defence in particular before the all Ireland or even at half time in that game. We stumbled on our best centre back due to injury last year, there needs to be real competition in the squad which means successive league games for players who are looking to gain a place, selecting a senior player for every league game at 11 and then never playing him there come championship isn’t the best use of opportunity either
Never knew you were a troll, thanks for pointing yourself out (y)

Did he not start there against Waterford?

Some of this I'd agree with, but at the same time Cork have improved year on year under Ryan, so I don't think wholesale changes (barring injuries) would be a good idea. Realistically we're looking at a maximum of three unforced changes to the starting team, and maybe the same again on the bench. Let's focus on particular players: whose place do you think is most likely to come under threat, and who is most likely to challenge for a place on the starting XV or the bench?

Lads, some of ye may have heard the story about the young lad in Clare - Joe Slattery - who suffered life altering injuries last Thursday while at training. Played underage with Clare U16 football and hurling. I have no connection to the family or club or anything, just putting it here if folk have a couple of euros they might consider donating. All gaels need to pull together on things like this. Link here to a go fund if anyone interested:

Fair dues Duke - Christ, I dont know anything about what happened him but thats absolutely awful for Joe and his family

Interesting conundrum for Pat Ryan and his team for 2025 ?
Which players from the 2024 under 20 team comes onto the senior panel proper ?
Those that I think would be most likely O Sullivan, Lyons, Wilk , Healy, Buckley, Leahy and O Connor ( depending on which sport he prioritises). Cilllian Tobin may also be in with a shout. Looking at just that list I think it would be difficult to say that none have a chance of playing senior inter county. There are certainly one or two other like Dwyer who also may not be far away.

However, I just don't see how that many can be added to an already competitive squad.
I am guessing most will find their way into a development squad.
It's like any set-up, it happens bit by bit, but if a lad gets exposure to the senior set up and consistently shows he up to it then there's no stopping them. Over the last 5 seasons, is it true to say that we've always had 1 to 2 u21s in the senior championship match-day panel and either zero or 1 u20 in the senior championship match-day panel (Eoin Downey & Ciaran Joyce)? Last year we had zero u20s but I would say it's quite unlikely that we will have zero u21s in the match-day squad this coming season.

Do we know if all of those names above are now on the training panel? I'd be surprised if most of them weren't. Then it's simply a case of seeing who shows they're good enough, and ready, through to the end of January/ early Feb. Across the rest of the panel, some lads might fall out of form or get injured - basically, room will be made for an u21 who is showing he's ready.

From looking at where we need better options and from watching the young lads in question last year, it'd be Lyons and Healy for me. But there are others like the 3 watergrasshill lads, Mullins etc that are a little older and still well capable of changing the shape of the match-day panel. It definitely can be improved and I think we have the new options to improve it so hopefully these lads will be given chances. Exciting times.
