Cork Hurlers - Part 2

I think as long as GAA clubs get massively funded developments of their club grounds then members will accept what commercialism there is. They may not be very happy about it but they will accept it.
I disagree. Volunteerism is the rock upon which the GAA sits.
Commercialisation destroys that amateur ethos on the ground over time.
At inter county and at most top senior clubs the players are the only ones not getting paid at this stage..Management, the S&C, psychology, sports therapist, video, the ref are all getting paid. Some players At inter county and the very odd club player are getting a wedge.
It’s not long away that underage club coaches will have to be paid.
The GAA do nothing to see after the volunteers that keep the thing going. It doesn’t effect me personally but it’s appalling to see clubs raffling off AI tickets in open members draws- a member who does nothing, maybe even mostly unknown in the club gets the ticket but the fella cutting the pitches for nothing all year doesn’t.. Oh but the president does say the AI day belongs to him.. 😂😂

Precisely.

Burns speech was complete marketing speak bollocks with no real meaning.

His whole reaction to RTE cherry picking the best games of the Munster hurling championship for its subscription service said a lot more than some twaddle about the amateur ethos.

Outside of Cork and Limerick hurling amd the two finals the story of the GAA year was dwindling crowds and the pick of games behind a paywall.

I dont get what their strategy is tbh other than looking like complete money grabbers with little interest in getting the games as much exposure as possible.
People all over social media praising Burns for his speech, Puffing their chests out with pride of the volunteer organisation, FFS.

One thing we have to acknowledge as almost a unique Cork problem. Tickets.
All Ireland tickets are scarce at the best of times.. but when we ever we are in an AI it’s a problem for us on a completely different stratosphere.
We have a massive population as a county with a very high level of sporting interest and participation in GAA. Our GAA population is 10 times that of Kilkenny or Clare. You go to Dublin on the day of an AI and within a few miles of their stadium you won’t know the game is on.
So our ticket problem doesn’t bother a lot of the GAA. With as many clubs in Cork as the rest of Munster combined it also leads to the scheduling difficulties etc

I don’t disagree with a lot of that. GAAGO certainly is a step too far and I agree that both the inter county and club game have become too serious.

They should change how tickets are allocated. They should be assigned based on club numbers and not a blanket 16k each. That’ll never happen though.

I was at a meeting and County Board money man spoke.. thus us exactly what he said. He gave examples of approx attendances and the gate receipts returned by clubs .. it was actually hilarious
Plus Club volunteers don’t want to be standing on the side of the road with thousands of € on them. Plus club secs don’t want the responsibility for the county boards cash either

Alas there was always "leakages" at the gate on the takings - the GAA authorities themselves were probably the biggest culprits at "underestimating" the size of a crowd - presumably for revenue purposes.

But if the bulk of the punters are coming through the gate on pre-paid electronic "tickets" then it's not beyond the wit of man, or even of the GAA, for there to be one cash or tap gate too (except at games likely to sell out obviously).

They can have officials from different clubs manning that one gate so there's no chicanery.

But this "Errah I don't are how long or hard the old codgers worked behind the scenes at their club, if they won't get with the times then that's their problem" attitude stinks imho.

Above: An angry man who watches Hurling for 2 months of the year waiting on the Premiership to begin before he can proceed with Vegetation . Doesn't attend Club games, not part of a a Club . Doesn't go Inter County games but Yerra the Gaa is the Boogey man out to destroy Volunteerism. I mean FFS this thread has capitulated to complete fucking TWATTERY.

Interesting stuff. I often wondered what became of Pat Fitzgerald, whether he was still county secretary. I do visit Clare Hurlers on occasion and I know he wasn't well-regarded on there, nor Davy, either.

As to Cork winning an All-Ireland hurling title again, frankly at this stage I'm beginning to lose confidence that it will be in my lifetime. I wonder if it possible Biddy Early has come to live in Cork?
Biddy early was a great woman. She was a woman who looked after people with all sorts of concoctions. Her biggest crime was living an independent life during a time when women were supposed to be subservient to men. Long dead before hurling was relevant beyond localised betting opportunity's for landlords
