Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Hopefully what happened after 2013 won't happen again. I think we (and Clare too) were punching back then, whereas now we are closer to the top along with limerick. We have underage success behind us that we did not have then. We have more balance on the team and better s&c.

That said some familiar themes; inconsistency from match to match, a need to be the underdog, leaky defense still, questionable ball winning up front.

At the height of his powers he wasn’t a concern for opposition? I’ve heard it all now???

And not using him to replace Dalton and instead plumping for Kingston or O Connor was a much bigger mistake
no. He would never have been a part of the conversation in Clare as a threat.
I only recall one season when he was excellent, the year i cant pinpoint but i do remember him being a factor

Jimmy Barry Murphy worked miracles with an average selection

Davy fitz made utter shite of a squad with massive options
he had 6 players from the squad that made the 08 munster senior final

he had 3 outstanding under 21 sides to pick from 08 09 10 followed by 3 all conquering sides in 12 13 and 14 with a bonus side that took out waterford and lost to limerick by 3 points in the 2015 munster final. Anyone know what became of those tipp lads from 08 and 10 or the limerick boys in 2015?

he squandered gold.

One thing that gives me heart is the comparative size of our lads next to Limerick and Clare. We do look a few years behind in S & C. Thought the same about Wexford in Thurles actually. They were very slight next to Clare. We also have quite a few who you'd hope are close to ready for the team. I'd like to see Kingston (FB) and the Roches in particular proving that they're ready to step up. Hoggy and Harnedy will hopefully have replacements in Power and Cunningham - but that won't happen in one season. Lets hope that we see some serious form from all of these guys in the club championship. Blarney v Glen could be a very tasty tie later on - lets see Power on Downey.

Before the final I posted that our panel had two names which I thought were not up to the standard. I still won't bother naming them. Most of us know who they are and I'd expect them to depart over the winter. But for the club championship I wouldn't really give any fella a chance to 'play his way back in.' It's a tough call, but if you've consistently under performed in the red, I reckon it should be acknowledged that you just won't do no matter how good you look at club level. Lets give the limited spaces to lads who haven't had a shot yet.

Finally, Ben O'Connor would be a serious addition to the sideline if he'd do it. He has that kind of manic drive that Ryan doesn't seem to have. RYan has his own qualities it seems, but a touch of mania isn't one of them. O'Connor's U20 teams had that kind of cynical edge that plays well with modern refs too.

Have to say Conor Lehane is a good egg. Up in CUH today visiting the children when he could have easily thrown the toys out of the pram getting no game time over 90 mins Sunday. A decade of service given to Cork deserves a lot of respect
Lehane got zero respect from Ryan on Sunday. Playing a 37 year old with a pulled hammy in front of him and not getting any game time.
Can’t see him back next year if he has any pride in himself.
We are behind the curve with our goalkeeping strategy as well - new goalie or new strategy required.

Not sure about that, I'd have my doubts about Ben O'Connor at senior level.
Pat Ryan is the ideal man, we don't need to be looking for anyone to join him or replace him. Just back him and let him at it

Not sure why everything has to be in such extreme binaries. It’s fair to say that Ryan has given Lehane plenty of opportunities and that Lehane hasn’t taken advantage of them. It is nonsense though, to say that he was never viewed as much of a threat. Multiple opposition coaches have publicly stated the direct opposite, including Derek McGrath, who has mentioned multiple times that he viewed Lehane as Cork’s biggest threat when he was in charge of Waterford. Lehane was an excellent player and a headache for opposition coaches when he was at his best.

It’s the same with the refereeing stuff. It’s possible to think that there have been some dreadfully poor refereeing performances in matches involving Cork this year (i.e. Munster U20 final), without thinking there’s some big conspiracy behind it.
