Cork Hurlers - Part 2

I believe the issue is the distinguishing - Gerry Hussey a High Performance Coach/Mental Health experts (that's his field and credit due to him) but Caroline Currid is a Sports Psychologist.
With no disrespect to Gerry there's a massive difference between both.

Similar to those who are Masseuse there's a massive difference between those and Physiotherapists including costs.

Cork took the cheaper option (shock)

Next year we need an actual Sports Psychologist and not a performance coach.
Cork had an eminent sports psychologist in 2021 and got as bad a beating in an All Ireland final as anyone ever got. The same fella was a genius when Tipp won the All-Ireland.

This crowd all have massive welcomes for themselves. They're a modest but essential cog in a big machine. A lot of them are robbing the association blind and that's why we can't have integration now because 45 million is being spaffed away by mens intercounty teams and these lads and lassies are at the front of the line with the maw out. The money they're getting is a scandal.

Limerick could have had four Caroline Currids before the Morrisseys, Cian Lynch, Aaron Gillane and Gearoid Hegarty arrived on the scene and they would still have won fuck all.

You have others now crediting Anne Marie Kennedy for the Dublin six in a row. Jesus wept. The current sports psych there must be an awful clown so. Or maybe they haven't the players?

In fairness though when Galway won the All Ireland after decades of bottling it was with Hussey a performance coach rather than a sports psychologist. Were performance coaches better that year? Or did Galway just have the best team and he fitted in with where they were at at the time?

I absolutely see your point Tony and you make a great one at that.
It's just how the game is evolving.
Go back to our day - physios - sure what were they? Bit of cold water and if had a source, rub of poitin on the legs.

2021 I think was more S&C middle of Covid - Cork were restricted with pods and gym work - Limerick weren't restricted - each pod had a 'gym', 2021 Limerick beat us on a physical front.
Forward to 2024 and 2025 as we see other counties have stepped up to Limerick's physicality.

Yeah you're right in what you're saying but to move the physio analogy on, how many people could name the physios of the main intercounty teams? To my mind at least of greater importance than the psychs but they just go about their business quietly and get it done, never looking to be the main character. I suppose I'm probably a bit of a curmudgeon about it, but it grates on me the way these guys are the main characters when it all goes right but walk away quietly when it doesn't.

I agree to an extent, but I think a lot of it has arisen because of the cult of Caroline Currid!

There is such an air of mystique around her and what she has done for the Limerick team (which is to an extent self fulfilling!) that people have gotten the idea that these people are magicians, rather than just another part of the team.

I have no doubt that CC is great at her job, but she is only a small part of what made (and makes) that Limerick team the awesome beast that it is.

Spot on, agree with all that.

Maybe an analogy might be that Caroline Currid is to being a sports psych what Nickie Quaid is to being a keeper. But in much the same way you can't just grab a keeper from the Cork senior championship and put him in and say "Do what Nickie Quaid does" I think it's a bit reductive for AM Kennedy to say if we just get someone with the same qualifications as Caroline Currid (i.e. herself) then all will be well.

You are spot on about the bit in bold, the amount of money being spent on backroom teams is scandalous and needs to be curtailed, and while we are at it the cash payments to coaches in clubs up and down the country has to stop

its time the GAA return to our amateur ethos

Is she going to Tipp.?
