Cork Hurlers - Part 2

What he said was “we are going to win the league, win the munster championship and win the all-ireland”

A very silly statement to be making when we havent won an all ireland in 21years
If you're going to put something in quotes, at least have the decency to put what he actually said in there.

He was asked by the TG4 interviewer what Cork's goals were for the rest of the season he said
Keep winning, keep winning. Win the league, win Munster and win the All-Ireland. That's our goal, that's what we're gonna do,

Naturally the intent, nuance, meaning are all lost on morons who misquote him and spin it as a statement as opposed to an honest answer to a question. Something he subsequently said he had no idea people would take any notice of (given it was TG4 in the middle of February you can see how he'd think that).

oh look the decency police have arrived, a dozen or so misquotes later but at least your here now
He was asked by the TG4 interviewer what Cork's goals were for the rest of the season he said
yep, that they were going to win everything, like i said, thank you

sorry pet, didnt know you had a special ability that you can read someones intent, nuance and meaning. You must be so proud of yourself

And if you think a Cork player saying that live on air wasnt going to be highlighted you are more stupid than i thought you were

Keep winning, keep winning. Win the league, win Munster and win the All-Ireland. That's our goal, that's what we're gonna do,

A microphone was shoved in his face and it looks like he got drunk on his own hype. It was reasonable until he crossed the line with his utterly stupid imho “that (win league, Munster, AI)’s what we’re gonna do”

The Cork set up should STOP giving these types of interviews where the story has become more about portraying Cork as arrogant beyond their station rather than trying to glean any insight into what makes the team tick. “Thanks but No Thanks” - at least until we do the job. That’ll be time enough to give any behind the scenes interviews. Ditto on any post-match interviews - just try play it all down unless and until we’ve crossed the line.

Couldn’t care if it’s TG4, Leitrim Local Radio, or Sky News

Media engagement is part of the job though. Both for GAA funding and sponsorship

It is and these guys receive media training. What he said was unnecessary and places far more pressure on him and the team than should have been the case.
I agree it was unnecessary and unhelpful and I’d prefer if he stayed away from microphones next year. Unfortunately broadcasters, sponsors and online media companies know they’ll get clicks with Alan’s interviews with people wanting to see what he said this time.

Having said that, and I’m not specifically referring to you here, some people would have you believe absolute rubbish suggesting that Alan’s interviews back in the league were the reason Cork weren’t successful this year.

No problem at all with them engaging with the media. It's HOW they engage is the issue imho.

Don't give them hostages to fortune and ammunition to rip the piss out of Cork hurlers and support when giving interviews that say we are going to win. As long as the media find dupes to fill their column inches or podcasts they'll go mining in Cork. If they find that Cork aren't any more likely than any other county to give nuggets of gold in interviews they'll move their focus elsewhere.

I can't ever remember any other county being the butt of such widespread media jokes as Cork. "Book the trains and the hotels did ya" ran for a while. F**k the hacks, let them do some actual work rather than giving them absolute gold free, gratis, and for nothing.

Yeah if Connolly hadn’t said anything, nobody would take the piss out of Cork… What did the Cork players say in 2025 that made people take such delight in the loss to Tipp?

If Cork ever win an All-Ireland again it'll be with a team that embraces what people love to call "the hype" rather than hiding from it. You just can't. Cork hurlers are the biggest sports franchise for want of a better word in the country with the possible exception of the men's soccer team.

An interview Alan Connolly gave in February has absolutely sweet fuck all to do with why Cork fell flat on their faces in July. It is nonsense.

Theres never just one reason but the simplest reason Cork lost is the same reason we usually lose on these days in the last 5 years and that's because we don't either have or select enough players who can execute their skills under the absolute highest pressure. Perhaps we go on about interviews and things because it hurts to actually realise that it's a skills deficit as much as anything else, because that doesn't tally with our own image of ourselves.
