When you lose badly, again, all of these things are scramble points and excuses.
Sport in general is about character and personality. We lack both.
Developing that isn't straightforward.
That's kinda the resentful hurler on the ditch take - moralizing a technical problem.
Tactics determine probability.
If the MODs of this world break you with the tactical set-up, and their players are drilled for weeks to execute the plan - you're probably gonna lose.
Regardless of how much "grit" lads have If they're only drilled to play their usual game versus a system that's set-up specifically to stop it, they're set-up to lose.
Unless our AvB involved setting up a 13 man blanket defence and playing against it lads were only prepped "on paper" for the reality.
Character is a constant, every Cork player on that pitch has sacrificed years of normal life to be there, putting their bodies to the absolute limit. Fitzy had an apendectomy just 6 weeks ago ffs - the work to get himself back in condition in that timeframe takes extreme discipline. This team showed what you'calling "character" coming back from the dead to beat Limerick, possibly the greatest team ever in RR in 2024, beating them again in CP. It wasn't just character though - PR and co came up with a new set-up and tactics that caught the Limerick machine off guard.
Lads showed "character" in the resilience and application to come back from the AI last year to win every game in the RR in Munster, something that nobody else has done bar Tipp.
To suggest that lads lose their fundamental human personality during a 70-minute defeat on a Saturday is just pure nonsense.
There's a lot of soul searching and deep deep analysis to be done between now and next season.
Clearly more than one thing went wrong in both our prep and our execution in the biggest game of the year.
The management and team will need to be brutally honest with themselves to get to the roots of it.
I personally believe that the fact that our baseline is good enough and consistent enough to get us to the latter stages is the biggest challenge.
We're getting a lot right, so for that reason, to date, it looks like management and players are possibly overly cautious about changing things - focus has been on tweaking.
100% don't think anything needs to be dismantled but honest, data driven and objective analysis will surely surface where some key and hard changes will need to be made.
I say it often: we need the right changes for the right reasons, just hoping that the people making the decisions are cool minded and have a clear, strong vision for the identity of the team.
