Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Would Sean O Donoghue or Niall O Leary do full back....I think they would be fine obviously only worry would be in the air against a full forward who's strong in the air but would a full back line of

Sean O Donoghue Niall O Leary and Ger Millerick?

Ger Millerick did much better on Aaron Gillane tonight than Sean O'Donoghue, a poor selection decision to make the switch.

If Ger Millerick and Cormac O'Brien are both out Cork are at a loss defensively.

Millerick, Downey, O'Connell & B. Walsh did really well tonight

For all Seamie's experience he is hitting too many wides and Brian Hayes needs to catch some high ball rather than trying to guide everything down from the air with his stick.

Ger full back is an option in fairness, and if we are going man on man with one of them coming out the pitch on occasions hes well able to play that role too. But its Rob at 3 for me

Barrett is constantly too high and nearly every tackle he puts in leads to him giving away a free or an advantage, needs to change or he will end up sent off again in a match.
Clear that we have an issue scoring goals vs limerick while they have no such problem going right through the full back position usually and we don’t seem to have sorted that out, add in our lack of consistency from puckouts and hoping that Connolly will end up being a 9/10 free take come championship shows things aren’t as rosy as the we are cork crowd assume.
Positives are Barry Walsh obviously and finally O’Connell being recognised as corks best midfielder, rob downey is corks no 1 centre back but Eoin Downey is the second best, I just don’t see any collection of cork full backs matching up vs gillane and O’Brien and essentially whether it’s a league Munster or all Ireland final that’s part of the difference between cork and limerick.
On top of that when it comes to mentality limerick will never get beaten by 10 plus
Points but we all know it’s in this cork team
All very fair.

My tuppence worth. I don't think Daire OLeary had the nightmare people are making out.

He got caught for the first goal.
He needs to become a tad more cynical.
Granted.

That being said. He's brave.
Is not afraid to go into the trenches.
He kept showing as an outball
His stick work is good.
I thought he got better as the game went on.

Not sure what hes like in the air.
Yet.

He does lack a half yard of pace.
But he was in the toughest environment you could possibly face tonight.
Against the best full forward line in the game.
With two corner backs that may not start come Chship.

Niall O L and Sean OD as the two CBs if thats how it plays out have a lot of pace. And experience.
Full backlines defend as a unit as well as M2M.

I would 💯 play him in both games.
The Offaly game and the league final.

As we lost, lets start with the work ons. its not the end of the world, but

Our tackling is just awful at times, I think teams are starting to know this and go down easy enough knowing the ref will give a free but thats on us. This will really catch us in cship if not solved.

On tackling, Lim flake us just as much, but they do it much craftier and with more skill and discipline. They had been coached really well in this, we havn't IMO.

Limerick puck outs and strategy were far better, Quade has a much better, lower, non lob puck out than Pa Collins who had a poor game for me, his lob of puck out is very easy to defend against. Add in poor long range fees and short puck outs not going to hand.

Is Cian Lynch a protected species, refs just love him.

Daire O'Leary, this is a big wake up call, its all about how he responds now.

Mullins, poor touches for this level, battled well to his credit but touch let him down.

Cahalane, started well but pace is an issue and he took the wrong option on the ball at times.

Joyce, looked abit lost midfield. Better wing back but he wasn't moving well tonight.

Kingston, really struggled, we were eaten alive on puck outs. I think everyone knows that hitting a Pa Collins lob to Kingston is not his game. Its impact sub or nothing with Kingston.

Barrett, played well in touches but we needed more tonight.

Harnedy looked quite slow when introduced.

Now to the played well.

Mellerick, played as well or better on Gillane than NOL & SOD in previous years. Really good defending, unlucky not to get a free or 2 as Gillane had him in a head lock at times. Look how our best player last week, SOD, struggled on Gillane towards the end.

E Downey, played very well, has the touch and balance to get fees and footwork to dance out of tackles like Coleman. He is now a serious Centre back option with more pace than his brother.

Tommy O'Connoll, 3 points from play, tackled his ass off, he was careful after the yellow card. Lynch dominated though but TOC did well.

Barry Walsh, did ok on Hayes, a big step up on last week but he did well enough, 2 nice points in the 1st half.

Hayes did fine.

I not sure R&B, GIllane could turn Rob D all day, its Mellerick on Gillane from now on for me.
Read my earlier post, Limerick will play 2 inside, Gillane and Bull, with Casey floating in and out, thats how they always do it

So if we are intent on playing a deep center back sweeping in front of them play Rob there, if we are going man on man move Rob half back and get Joyce or Coleman to track Casey

This is only for a team playing a 2 man full foward line

What about Cahalane full back he did nothing wrong last year . It’s not a great sign heading for championship and the jury out on the goalie full back and possibly centre back

In fairness though, with the modern structure of the championship it's not like your team is nailed down on day one. There will be lads in at least half the lines who start against Tipp the first day who won't start the last group game, between injuries, form and horses for courses selections. You have four massive games in 6 weeks. Things will happen.

We've seen more than enough out of Cork to know they have what it takes to get out of Munster. And if they don't then they were at nothing anyway. The team that plays in the all Ireland quarter or semi is the 2026 Cork team. I'd say we know the identity of 10 of them at this stage. There's up to 7 games between league and championship to arrive at that point.
