Cork Hurlers - Part 2

I see a lot of people here picking their teams for championship. What amazes me is nobody has Seamus Harnedy starting, in my opinion he must start.
Granted he might not be able for a full 70 mins.
But I don't think he's a man to finish off a game. That's for speedy lads like Kingston, Robbie O'Flynn, when the game has opened up.
Harnedy is a man to keep you in the game to make sure you're in a good position with 20 mins to go.
Cork struggled early in the league game v Galway, it was Harnedy who did stuff to ensure Cork didn't let the game slip away. I think it would be madness not to use him from the start of a championship game.
Hundred per cent. Hardedy should be nailed on to start if fit. But would the same about Duds, Barrett and Fitz obviously. Any of the latter three could play the roving corner forward role I suppose. I could see the positions in the forwards being a lot more fluid this year and looked a bit that way Saturday night.

Was talking to my young fella and he said he saw a good chunk of the cork team blowing off some steam in town Sunday night.
A well deserved break for these lads after relentless training since last November.
We might want to see them play week in week out but they are only human.
Ben will have a good plan for this break and I imagine an intense in house match during the week. The depth in this panel is so good aj in house game could be the best for some of these lads to prove a point and put a hand up.
I imagine it will be all guns blazing against Kilkenny as they aren’t a Munster side and could have a championship feel to the occasion.
The one thing I don’t like is having Offaly as our last game. No disrespect to Offaly but it’s important to get some good tests before championship kicks in and getting players sharp and game ready, it’s so close to championship I don’t think it’s a game where you can be trying things out as some are suggesting.
A league final could be ideal if but it would more than likely be against a Munster side. Maybe that’s the time to do a bit of shadow boxing and play 4/5 on the edge players.

There's also the argument of him coming on to steady the ship and chip in with a crucial late point or two, something he has done time and time again. Something Noel McGrath has become a master of in recent times but something Seamie has done from starting games, but with the legs going, it is also an option. Class is permanent etc etc etc.

He'll have a big part to play this year again either from the getgo or off the bench, lord willing he stays fit and healthy for it.

Probably a stupid question, but one for those of ye au fait with the rulebook, is there a definition of a "melee"?
Did Tipp ask for this a few years ago after Jason forde and Davy had a run in. I think Jason forde was sent off for contributing to the melee but tipp said it couldn't be a melee as any 2 involved or something like that.

I'm not exactly sure when a fracas becomes a melee or a melee becomes a schemozzle and that then becomes a free for all

If you're attempting to remove someone from melee or are actively doing that i think there's no punishment but again very unclear difference between contributing to the melee and attempting to remove someone from the melee.....I'd have some pity on the refs on this

The free taking has to be one of the big unresolved issues so far in league - I'm not totally convinced by connolly on frees with fitzgibbon on far out ones. Connolly was very good from play last time just not sure about his free taking under pressure but could be wrong here and hope I am

What would be wrong with giving them all to fitzgibbon - i thought he was good at them in league last year from memory

That skirmish last Sunday, where about 30 players pushed each other around for 5 minutes would hardly qualify as a melee. The Munster final of 1961 between Cork and Tipp at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick had a proper fracas, when sets of players laid into each other. A Tipp player Tom Moloughney was carted off… last Sunday’s little dust up was nothing.

I was there.!

Hopefully Ben Cunningham is getting fit , i think in the long run he will be our freetaker....its tough on him he has suffered with injurys very hard on a young fella to get up to speed at this level ...and he would need all the games possible to help him get up to the level required ....hope his luck changes...likewise Paudi Power ....
A few games for him as well and he would be a serious option as well ....best of luck to the two lads.
