Cork Hurlers - Part 2

We have got more than our fair share of reds in the last few seasons, some warranted, some not and all have been well debated at length here. The referees decision will be determined by what the players do on the field, not by what Ben said. Our players have to be disciplined, simple.

There is a clear effort by referees this season to implement the black card rule for fouls to prevent goal chances. I would think that Cork would probably benefit from that approach if it continues to be properly implemented come championship - lots of Cork forwards fouled en route to goal in recent seasons (particularly against Clare if I recall correctly!) and we havent got too many penalties from it - apart from the famous Kingston/Kyle Hayes one v Limerick on that memorable night in PUC.

Sheedy is on the Examiner pod this week. Normally wouldn’t listen but he is definitely someone whose opinion on Cork I would value. He was very strong on the booing/jeering of McCarthy; something I personally would completely agree with.

He also made a very interesting point about Cork’s abrasiveness / manliness whatever you want to call it. Basically saying that their tackle execution is very poor and something that will catch us in the summer. He mentioned we had conceded 1-30 against scoring 1-10 in just three games. That is massively unsustainable; giving up 11 points in free per game, whilst only scoring c 4.3 ourselves. And that can’t all be down to the refs all being out to get us 😆
I am sure the stats team are analysing where those fouls are being committed and who are the guilty parties. The data does not lie. It will be a factor in team selection as we have options.

That’s true Leeside. The other side of that is if one doesn’t appeal and if Barrett gets another red in the summer then the suspensions get cumulatively worse. Also the player might wish to maintain his good name and reputation re being known as someone who had a number of red cards.
Fair point, but on what basis do you appeal? Barrett was involved, had his hands on opposition players. So how exactly does an appeal get him off the red card

"Contribute to a melee" is a red card. Obviously you could argue that everyone should have got a red card so.
But if that's in the referee's report how do prove that Barrett did not "contribute to a melee". By the letter of the rule book both red cards were correct.
I'm not sure, worse red cards have been appealed and succeeded, could easily be downgraded to a yellow, especially seeing as nobody who has commented on the incident deems it a red. Although of all players on the team, Barrett could probably do with a rest as much as anyone so might not be much harm done.
