Cork Hurlers - Part 2

I made the point a while back that if you want the refs to let the game flow and give them a chance to perform at their best, the onus is on every person in the ground...you can't expect it to happen when even at club games you have players, mentors, supporters roaring for soft frees after every attempted tackle.

The onus is on every GAA person to show an honest attitude but its not happening at any level.

Ben O Connor is correct when talking about the ref assessments too...they have a good game and they never get another big game all year, because they didn't meet their stats when their performance is reviewed.

Some refs at IC level like to be the centre of attention but apart form those few clowns the rest are honest enough but under savage pressure from everyone else involved.
Completely agree the crowd have a part to play but it’s unrealistic to expect fans not try call for every half infringement and the refs need to be above that.

I don’t actually blame the refs they are trying to ref the game the way they are instructed by those above as Ben as mentioned.

Bunts of the Hurley, head tackles, grabbing the face guard should be reds, players are after getting so fast and strong there does need to be a level of zero tolerance to make sure nobody gets seriously hurt.

What happened tonight was a complete farce, 2 teams who recently played and AI final squaring up pushing and shoving, nobody taking a backward step, it’s mental warfare more than anything!

The ref should have dished out a load of yellow cards and If fellas overstepped the mark again they are gone and rightly so as they had fair warning.

Liam Gordon was supposed to ref the game but from where was sitting it was Johnny Murphy decided what was happening, maybe I’m wrong on that I need to watch it back but that was my take at the time

Yes I agree...but the problem is the lads in the crowd roaring for soft frees today will be balling out a local ref an a club game next week for giving soft frees but not see the cause and effect! OK it's different refs but the whole thing trickles down.

There's no real accountability taken by supporters, a lot of whom are involved in club at various levels...be it as mentors or supporters to the pressure being put on refs.

Can’t agree with that, if it was true then we would have at the very least a basic level of consistency. across referees.
We don’t. Are they under pressure, I have no doubt but the there is zero consistency.
Look at the difference even just this week between Kennedy and Gordon.

I agree that halfback line is probably nailed on. Noticeable today that Rob Downey held his position and didn’t follow Ormond out the field. In fact, Rob positioned just in front of full back line, and I don’t think Tipp got any goal chance. Tip employed a sweeper in first half, and Coleman was our free man.. and was very effective.

It’s a fair point and being honest not something I had considered with regards club games.

My point is the same way IC players are at a much higher standard the clubs the refs should be too.

It’s the inconsistency within games that kills me, up in Salthill last week the soft frees awarded to Galway was unbelievable compared to the same tackles and worse put on Cork players.

The same was true the previous for Tipp against Galway were Galway got screwed.

It’s an impossible game to ref and it will never be perfect but the least that can be expected is consistency for both teams playing that match.

Tyler Walsh in the Munster final was the best example for me, let Cork and Limerick flake away, he didn’t get everything right but on balance it was fair to both teams

We’ve never seen consistency of refs in hurling and we never will for the simple reason it’s the fastest field sport in the world that allows for so much physicality the lines will always be blurred.

Considering the speed and power of the modern IC hurler it’s never been harder to ref a game than it is now.

Whatever about free’s that go for or against a team it’s the issuing of red cards that needs to be clear and fair to both teams as that determines the outcome of games.

It’s a no win situation for refs in this game, we need to help them be better and show them a bit more respect

We need to show respect to the players also. Yellow cards are routinely issued for innocuous events. Two yellows will get a player sent off, as Eoin Downey found on the biggest stage of all. Referees should only a yellow card when necessary…. That’s what BOC is addressing, and laying the blame at Croke Park.
