Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Just for clarity who are the guys on the training panel that you suggest wont make the cut?

Ps William Buckley is a banker to make the panel
I've mentioned that William Buckley is also in contention for a place as I forgot him in my original list. Hard to decide who misses out if Ben is strictly cutting it down to 36 players. Based on my list, the players who won't make the cut would have been involved in the UCC, Limerick and Clare games and not named above:

Ciarán Doolan, Tom Hanley, Cillian Tobin, Cian D'Arcy, Colm McCarthy, Jack O' Connor, Jack Cahalane, Barry Walsh, James Kearney, Colin O' Brien, Daniel O' Connell, Matthew Barrett, Jayden Casey, Barry O' Flynn, Ronan Dooley and Jack Leahy.

Alan Walsh, Darragh O Sullivan and Paudie O Sullivan were excellent for me last night. O Sullivan was really solid inside in the goal, good puckouts, excellent handling, caught one great ball under the crossbar under pressure in the first half and one excellent save in the second. Made one silly mistake that led to the concession of a 65 but that mistake didn't phase him.
I think he'll get minutes in the league and could put proper pressure on Collins for the number 1 jersey.

O Sullivan was excellent in the corner, really dogged defending and intelligent use of the ball in possession. I'd have concerns with regards his height but certainly he's in contention to get league game time and we see more of him then.

Walsh was a handful. Very rough but the raw materials are there. A bit like Brian Hayes 2 or 3 years ago. Get him on the panel and watch his hurling improve.

Shane Kingston (Ballinora) and Daire O Leary were also solid. I'd have them on the 37. Big improvement from Ethan Twomey this week as well. As was rightly pointed out to me in hindsight after last week's game maybe he was trying to do too much in covering 2 novices on the wings while stopping Peter Casey and ended up falling between 2 stools and doing neither in the end.

Brian O Sullivan and Keating in midfield improved as the game went on. O Sullivan is a guy I expect will get league minutes as well.

Up front there's very interesting decisions to me. I'd expect Robbie O Flynn and Shane Kingston (Douglas) to make the cut. I'd expect Jack O Connor and Cian McCarthy to be let go.
Ben Cunningham and Sean Desmond are 2 interesting players for me. Cunningham is a fine free taker but in general play can be a bit greedy and I'd question his work rate at times, I'd still bring him in as the raw potential is there and those faults can be worked on.
Sean Desmond then works very very hard, has a good attitude gets out in front and can take a score when the chance arises. His touch at times has let him down over the 2 games but again that's something that can be worked on. I'd probably keep him on it as well.
Cian D'Arcy another interesting one. Supposed to be flying in training and did will v UCC but found the the games since tough going. Not so sure he will make it.

A very interesting week ahead.
From what we are told the players have been training harder than anything they have done in recent years, it is likely therefore that the ball work has not been as prominent yet as maybe it was before.

That will change in the coming weeks.

Regarding team selection , I was very impressed with Brian Keating in particular but also Brian O Sullivan.
However I don't think you could play two of Keating, TOC and O Sullivan in midfield as they are very similar and none are tall and strong. I think you need an enforcer to play alongside any of that three... but who that might be I am not sure. Someone in the Bill Cooper mould.

I'd go with this group

GK: Patrick Collins, Brion Saunderson & Paudie O' Sullivan (3)

Def: Seán O'Donoghue, Niall O'Leary, Robert Downey, Eoin Downey, Ciarán Joyce, Mark Coleman, Cormac O'Brien, Damien Cahalane, Ger Millerick, , Darragh O'Sullivan, Ballinora Kingston, Daire O'Leary, Tom Hanley & Eoin Roche (14)

Mid: Tim O'Mahony, Darragh Fitzgibbon, Ethan Twomey, Tommy O'Connell, Micheál Mullins, Brian Keating & Brian O'Sullivan (7)

Fwd: Diarmuid Healy, Shane Barrett, Declan Dalton, Brian Hayes, Alan Connolly, Douglas Kingston, Robbie O'Flynn, Séamus Harnedy, Alan Walsh, Ben Cunningham, William Buckley & Pádraig Power (12)

Unlike some, I hope we do see at least 3 new faces on the team and a few positional switches also. We're not as close to AI glory as some seem to think in my opinion. A change here or there won't get us over the line. We need some changes. Not wholesale, but more than 1 or 2.

Power isn’t considered because of injury for league.
Take out two backs, add in Hugh O Connor and I’d say you are on the money.

If the panel I'm hearing is correct then there isn't really much surprises.
I thought Sean Desmond might scrape into it but he hasn't.
I'm disappointed that Padraig Power isn't on it, his injury must not be responding as well as we were initially led to believe. I'd hope he can come back in as the league progresses but who knows.
I raised an eyebrow when I heard Hugh O Connor as having made it. Probably the only really contentious decision that could generate a heated debate in my opinion.

No Sars player made the cut. Is it the first time the county champions have never had a player good enough to make the Cork panel?
