Cork Hurlers - Part 2

They still have the highest scoring forward line in the country.

Cork have a very good forward line, this isn’t up for debate so I’m not sure what it is your taking issue with
2 finals in a row they did not turn up. They’re very good players who have failed to perform on the biggest day 3 times in 4 years. Not just the forwards.

You don’t think they showed up in the 24 final? Stop now they were very good that day just unlucky not to get over the line.

The team collectively didn’t perform in this years final but I don’t think we can ignore the 30 odd other games they’ve played over the past 2 years as a result.

Been to a few fr. o'neills games and took special attention to Paudie O'Sullivan's puck-outs.

Whatever about his shot stopping, there'll be no problem with his distribution.
Especially his short balls, lot of young keepers make the mistake these days of trying to belt it into a fella's hand from 20 yards, POS plays a perfect looping ball to the hand every time.

His long puckouts are also very good, long range, very accurate and high velocity on them as they're coming down, probably perfect ball for the long breaking ball puckout, but that could change under BOC.

The thing that probably would best give him an advantage over PC and BS is how quickly he likes to get the play going again. He doesn't watch the ball go wide or tap the crossbar as the ball is going over, he sprints to the umpire to get the ball for the next play and starts scanning. Cork used this, especially vs Limerick twice last year, to make extra room for the forwards and not allow the opposition the chance to reorganise.

I've thought up to this club championship that Saunders was the obvious succession to PC, but I think giving all these lads a fair crack at the whip in Jan would benefit the position overall. I wouldn't be surprised to see any three of them starting.

They absolutely were not unlucky. 3 very avoidable goals conceded and we only reached extra time because Clare started fouling and Hoggie dragged us through with his frees. Clare were the better team and no lesser people than JBM, Pat Ryan and several of the players have said so publicly.

Finals are where performances are needed most. Nobody will remember beating Tipp by 10 points in the league final or Dublin by 20 in a semi final in 10 years time.

I’m a big fan of his and personally I think he is ahead of Saunderson

As usual you’re missing the point, go back and read the posts I said Cork have a good forward line and need to improve in the full back area

Apart from Patrick Horgan it would appear we will have the same group of players that got us to two successive All Ireland finals.
One terrible performance but the other was a very good performance decided in extra time..... these are good players and will not become poor overnight. We know there will be some new faces as well.

For me, it is Ben O Connor and his team who face the biggest challenge as a management group.
I have listened to John Meyler, JBM, Kieran Kingston and Pat Ryan talking about the challenge of manage a senior inter county hurling team for the first time. Manager of the Cork senior hurlers is an even bigger challenge because of the expectation and the enormous following.....I don't think any other county comes close.

They have spoken of the very steep learning curve they faced and admitted to mistakes made in particular in the early days.

I hope he does talk to some of these men who with luck can forewarn him of what the pitfalls are.
It was interesting to hear Myler say that his year involved b4 taking on the job himself was a great help in preparing him. Obviously, we can't always arrange it this way but it's a steep learning curve for Ben and his team.

I expect he'll use the league to see who might be added to the squad. Pat Ryan looked at a lot of options so I can't see too many new faces. Maybe Barry Walsh and Brian Cunningham - Leahy was dominated by Damo in Barrs v Imokilly but he'll get his chance too. Power should be close and Jack O Connor will surely get a go.

Cork do have a good forward line. However they have not performed when mattered most.

Doubts still remain about Connolly and Dalton btw. Hayes is top top class and Harnedy is a great player too. Barrett didn’t have his best year. Healy looks very promising.

So we’re in agreement Cork have a good forward line, wasn’t so hard was it?
