Cork Footballers

It was indeed incredible that in 2009 the team that won the county and did so comfortably didn’t have a single representative on the cork panel.

McManus moved to Clon when he was 15/16 iirc, moved from Mayo. I met people from Mayo who couldn’t believe how he had progressed between the ages of 16-21, needless to say the great man Haulie ONeill played no small part in that. Colum Calnan another overlooked player from that team that would have started for every other team in the county.
McManus on his best day was electric. Should have been involved with the Cork seniors in 09, would have dealt with Kennelly and co.

The Hartnett Brothers Niall and Brian from Douglas looked to be and are two very good talents ...its a shame they are not involved with the Cork Seniors not even the development squads ...both won Sigerson Cup medals and Brian looked the part and played well when he was in with seniors before..so many good young talents get lost along the way in our county .
Ya its a shame they both wont play.Maybe next year.

We’re better off moving on, no point wasting any more time and energy on flaky Douglas players (Powter the notable exception). Invest time in guys who live and breathe football, we need guys from the football heartland of West Cork, players who live for it and will die with their boots on.

A biy foxy

Walsh situation is completely different to the Ilen lad. Walsh is travelling home to be a the main man for an All-Ireland contender. Hassett is travelling home to play friendlies for Corks 3rd team in front of 3 men and a dog in the middle of the week.

He could easily continue to play for Ilen by training with a club in Dublin and travel home every 3/4 weeks. Clearly travelling home isn’t a problem, so is it just a case of he doesn’t fancy being part of a struggling Ilen team and playing senior football in Dublin is more appealing? If that’s the case, fair enough just don’t expect a pat on the back for showing “great commitment” for travelling home to play development squad friendlies.

Thats his own business.

2009 final clon won by a point not by their brilliance but for the fact that nepotism was involved in the Barrs team where the manager played his own son instead of one of our best forwards J Sexton who nearly won the game for us in the 13 minutes he was on.
Clon had the Barrs beaten out the gate that day, up 7/8 points if I recall correctly and took the foot off the gas.

Yeah in fairness sexton did wreck when he came on, crazy he didn’t start. But a good Clon team who had been knocking on the door for a while were by far the better team and fully deserved the win.

Credit due to the Barrs for getting to the 09 and 10 finals with what wasn’t a vintage Barrs team, definitely carrying a couple of weaker players and nowhere near as good as recent years.
