Declan Bogue on OTB says Cillian O Sullivan's goal after smashing the steps rule may well have cost Cork the game.
Can't be undone now but fair play to him for highlighting one of the most costly rule breaches, as it's impossible for a defender to stop a runner without infringing the tackle rule himself.

This is horse-sh*t. Just watched it again. His first carry was 4 or 5 steps which brought him through all tackles. Second carry before shooting was 7 steps, but no Cork player near him at this stage so made no difference. He could have solo'd three more times at that stage and would have made no difference. He was already through.
Clutching at straws here saying that should have been disallowed.
We all know 5 or 6 or 7steps is the norm these days. And more.

I think the rule says 4, but you know best obviously. Declan Bogue knows a thing or two about football and he was pointing out one of the many transgressions that go unpenalised and can be costly. Colm O Rourke knows that Cawley was missing the day they did the sums in his Kildare school. There's your horse dung for ya.

How the games are played bare little relation to the rulebook these days.
In practise, players can take 6 or 7 steps, and quite often more, without penalty.
That's the norm now.
Everyone involved in the game at a decent level operates in that basis. Including referees.
The 4 step rule per thevrulebook is totally antiquated (as are many other rules per the rulebook).
Saying Cian O'Sullivans goal should have been disallowed is absolutely nonsense. Get a grip of yourself.
Great goal. Had it been a Cork lad scored that nobody here would be talking about steps FFS.

The step rule is now only enforced in 2 situations in modern possession based football.
1) when a player is circled & choked of space by the opposition and is double or triple tacked.
2) when a player blatantly over carrys (9+ steps). In scoring situations the offending players layer still gets away with a lot of these.

In general, taking 6-7 steps is not pulled up.

This exactly.
Had O'Sullivan been surrounded by Cork lads on his second carry, he would either have been tackled on his next solo, or over-carried and blown.
However, no Cork player near him, and 6 or 7 steps as opposed to 10 or 11, so referee saw no issue.
I have no issue with referee's discretion here. They should probably update the rulebook accordingly.
