The running game is a very sound tactic in the final quarter when legs are tiring. Requires sharp shooters in the pocket. Definitely not a 70-minute tactic.

And yet for all their talent in the last 10 years they have a combined total of 1 West Cork championship and neither club have come within asses roar of a junior county.

In terms of young talent production Ibane are easily top 10 in the county. Yet they have produced sweet fuck all at adult level. How is it proper football clubs like the Haven, Clon and Ross are still streets ahead of them at adult level? It’s because those 2 are no mark football clubs who haven’t the expertise, experience or tradition to bring young footballers to the next level.

Because the best clubs hone very promising teenagers into superior players. The Barrs are very good at doing it in both codes. Nemo have been good at it up to recent years. Kerry do it better than anyone.

Teams generally play in ways optimal for the players they have. If you look at Cork's starting FF line, you see just one forward who is is jinky and fast enough to likely win a race to an early ball versus his marker. This is not to say that early ball should not be kicked in to the player's advantage to improve the odds, or that improvement in run-and-kick timing is not possible, or that different players should not be selected, but the basic probability of getting to a ball before the defender seems to be to be a very significant factor that is often not recognized in the criticism of Cork's playing style.

I haven't read in here since the Mayo game (too painful - not sure I'll read back at all), but I (likely in a minority) happen to think that the team generally plays a style that is optimal for the players we have, and that there was a combination of Mayo being prepared for that (whereas Donegal weren't) and also us pushing things a bit too much when we should have recycled ball a bit more (albeit a tactic not generally liked by supporters). Very easy for me to say sitting in the stands! In the longer term, I completely agree (as I'm sure everybody does, including the management) that a greater diversity of attacking threats would be of a great benefit - and this will involve a combination of emerging players combined with tactical adjustment to best exploit their capabilities.

Agreed, there's a reason why the big 4 are the big 4 and the rest are just the chasing pack - they have the tradition and coaching structures in place to convert good underage players into great senior players. Clon and the Haven are regularly not even in Premier 2 at minor/u16 level but still produce the best adult teams in the county. It's a testament to the importance of culture and club tradition - something the likes of Douglas, Carrigaline and even the 2 Ibane clubs will never have.

The forward line is very limited, McDonnell and Cronin in particular are not at the level required if cork are to seriously compete. Hopefully Corbett sorts his injuries out because he has the ability.
