Cork could be onto something with their excellent defending and ability to score 2 pointers.
We converted 6 from 10 attempts at 2 pointers
Donegal got 0 from 2
We got 11 scores - they got 14
Limiting them to 1-13 was really impressive.
We defended for dear life, turned them over and hit them on the counter
The goal they got was a boo boo.
And we missed a few big scores ourselves.
The narrative is as one would have predicted.
Donegal off form. And Cork lucky.
Usual shite.
It should be said having got an opportunity to watch the game in full.
It was a terrible match.
Cork made it a poor game.
But two major things on that:
1. It was deliberate.
2. Donegal would want to have a cheek to whinge about any kind of tactic.
We sat in
We held the ball. For huge stretches.
We literally ran the clock down in the first half by playing keep ball outside the arc for long stretches and every attack was a slow one.
That was absolutely essential to quell the local and vocal home support.
And it allowed us grow gradually into the game.
Gough, while not overtly favouring Cork, gave the kind of performance that facilitated a massive underdog upset.
He allowed contact.
He wasnt phased by home town jeers.
And had the strength of personality to punish bullshit.
Ultimately the players and the management deserve huge credit.
We are without question the most abused, ignored, disrespected, maligned and underrated football team in the game.
That is just a simple fact.
If anyone else had got promoted to D1, beat Meath with 14 players for a second time, and then go and beat Donegal in their own backyard people the narrative would be very different.
Thats the lot of a Cork footballer.
It's not a new thing. And it is something we and the players should use as fuel to drive on again now.
To make the last 4 on the back of all of the above would be unreal.
Important for supporters to get behind them.
