Cork Footballers

Interesting reading back on this today, a lot of different opinions swirling around.

Have to say was a bad day for players and management alike, kickouts and approach into the wind in particular, even though I thought what really killed us to start the 2nd half was a lack of patience in attack, see Kerrys approach in first half for examples, we then became too patient as a result.

Overall its a tough thing for Cork to deal with, very dissappointing on the big day again, this group has serious heart it showed yesterday even kept going and got ourselves within a post of being level with 5 to go, while clattering a few more of that shower while we were at it.

I think John has done a good job bringin us to a certain level and that shouldn't be locked down upon, I also don't really see who else we would get into replace him, its tough in Munster to find the hot young coach (Kerry with Jack a demonstration that even they lacking in it). Biggest issues for me is lack of oppurtunity for young players, even though I can understand the difficulties with the way div 2 was set up, still feel like Buckely yday is an example of why fellas need a go. I'd have liekd to have seen more Buckely, Cashman, Corbett etc. in a few league games

Long term a few issues need to sorted, how easy it is I don't know, I think there was 5 of the hurling lads who started Saturday played football underage, which is fair but to me the lack of transfer the other is an issue, the hurling underage seem to have too much of a pull picking lads who might start football to be on their extended panels etc. Also have likes of Jack Cahalane who was coming close to football 26 but left to go hurling and hasn't made a chmapo matchday panel yet in 2 years.

The numbers are there and underage results are moving in the right direction this year, the five year plan really should only be evaluated from here on in, when comparing similar plans that led to Dublin and Limericks rise, tahts the time period before we saw results. I think we can see some good already with the focus on shooting and goalkeeping being evident to me in our current minor crop.

Overall we're Cork football fans, yesterday was dissappointing but should not be a suprise unfortunately, we have to go again and back these lads even when we experience days like yesterday. Realistically this is the best our team has performed at adult level in 10 years over the last 12 months, so lets not let one result define how we feel about a group of lads who are giving it everything

Yeah - Cleary generally sticks to the tried and trusted. He is hamstrung to an extent in that underage football has been a shambles in last few years which has led to serious lack of talent ready for senior coming through. You could argue that you only need one or two each year but previous experience would suggest senior success follows underage success. Hopefully, this year's performances at underage hint at better days ahead and not a false dawn!

I wonder if Kerry put out another 15 yesterday made up of those not playing or injured, would they have beaten this Cork team?

The gap looked significant imo -

Not sure about that. They do have huge reserves of talent but if all their injured players were available but Clifford was missing, not sure would they have won yesterday. Literally everything goes through him or to him. He was unplayable at times. They wobbled yesterday after BOD goal but we didn't have the composure to exploit it.

Well said.

Kerry had 19 attacks in the second half and scored 1-13, cork had 17 attacks and scored 1-2, absolutely dreadful stuff, either they were told to wait until the perfect 95% chance to execute or else the players didn’t have the confidence to take on a slightly more difficult chance….either way a huge issue to address

I think we might be underestimating the strength of the wind on here, Kerry got men back and made it incredibly hard to get shots off. IMO we lost it in the first half with the wind at our back, gave away easy scores and didn’t mind possession when we had it.

Was on the red terrace yesterday it was gut wrenching to witness the amount of chances we abdicated, all were culpable of this some of the chances were simple tap overs It looked as if they were afraid of winning
