Cork Footballers

For a young lad Sheedy was a huge loss I thought

He's clearly very fit, covers a lot of ground, troubles his marker keeping up with him, generally gives the right simple pass at the right time and is available again - which tends to release other players to penetrate. I wouldn't say other players are not trying to do the same, but he's been quite good at it.

So I'm inclined to agree that he's a big loss, but I think it's important to not heap too much expectation 'cos he can't be great every day. He'd been generally doing almost everything right, and just keep it up.

Our trademark for years now seems to be lateral passing, sideways, backwards, and sideways again and God forbid we’d actually go forward with any real intent. To be fair, we started yesterday at a tremendous pace. There was real vigour about the performance early on and we put up a big score early doors

But like so many times before, it all petered out. Second half came and we reverted to type completely. Aimless handpassing back and forth, no real penetration, no urgency, no direct running, and no sense that we truly believed we could put the game to bed. It became the same slow, predictable stuff we’ve been watching for years.

And the reality is Kerry never really had to fully extend themselves. They barely had to move beyond second gear for most of the game. Any time Cork threatened to get close or build a bit of momentum, Kerry simply upped it a notch, took control again, and swatted us aside at their leisure

It was a desperate second half.
As bad and as insipid a display as ive seen.
And ive tried to always be positive and see glass half full.
We got slaughterhoused on our own kickout.
We had zero imagination up front.
Very few if any front foot players.
It was circuitous football with no creativity.
Lacking in composure.
Lacking in efficiency.
No real leadership in the team or on the line.

The ONE thing I hoped when we knew that Faloon was reffing I was hoping we would absolutely sow it in to them physically. We didnt do that either.

It was desperately disappointing

I think they let people down yesterday
And I think they know it.
And there's no point saying otherwise.
John Giles used to speak of players needing to have "moral courage" to winning matches. That seemed to stay in the Cork dressing room at halftime yesterday.

For 20minutes we were brillant ....that was it then , this team still has not gone to a place where they relay believe they can win big games ...its a mental thing
We need to see more new faces too ...good to see Corbett and Buckley play longer yesterday those two know where the posts are
Sadly end result another sickening loss to them
Now the lads have got to stand up and prove they are better ..a good run in the ALL Ireland Championship ...they have got to believe.

Would certainly like to see more of Buckley, took his point well

I do think people underestimated a bit the occasion this was a mental thing as much as anything . We have one 7 times in killarney in a munster finals in the history that's a poor record

Interesting reading back on this today, a lot of different opinions swirling around.

Have to say was a bad day for players and management alike, kickouts and approach into the wind in particular, even though I thought what really killed us to start the 2nd half was a lack of patience in attack, see Kerrys approach in first half for examples, we then became too patient as a result.

Overall its a tough thing for Cork to deal with, very dissappointing on the big day again, this group has serious heart it showed yesterday even kept going and got ourselves within a post of being level with 5 to go, while clattering a few more of that shower while we were at it.

I think John has done a good job bringin us to a certain level and that shouldn't be locked down upon, I also don't really see who else we would get into replace him, its tough in Munster to find the hot young coach (Kerry with Jack a demonstration that even they lacking in it). Biggest issues for me is lack of oppurtunity for young players, even though I can understand the difficulties with the way div 2 was set up, still feel like Buckely yday is an example of why fellas need a go. I'd have liekd to have seen more Buckely, Cashman, Corbett etc. in a few league games

Long term a few issues need to sorted, how easy it is I don't know, I think there was 5 of the hurling lads who started Saturday played football underage, which is fair but to me the lack of transfer the other is an issue, the hurling underage seem to have too much of a pull picking lads who might start football to be on their extended panels etc. Also have likes of Jack Cahalane who was coming close to football 26 but left to go hurling and hasn't made a chmapo matchday panel yet in 2 years.

The numbers are there and underage results are moving in the right direction this year, the five year plan really should only be evaluated from here on in, when comparing similar plans that led to Dublin and Limericks rise, tahts the time period before we saw results. I think we can see some good already with the focus on shooting and goalkeeping being evident to me in our current minor crop.

Overall we're Cork football fans, yesterday was dissappointing but should not be a suprise unfortunately, we have to go again and back these lads even when we experience days like yesterday. Realistically this is the best our team has performed at adult level in 10 years over the last 12 months, so lets not let one result define how we feel about a group of lads who are giving it everything
