Cork Footballers

It was the closest thing I’ve seen to the old rules that I remember. I think there was 1 two pointer and not many attempts at them. Was a very slow and possession based game which was the issue with the older rules.

I think someone mentioned it above but Cork need to find a way to let the handbrake off at certain moments in games. I can see the logic behind keeping possession etc but the game was there for the taking yesterday and likewise in the first game against Kerry this year but the handbrake stayed on and we kept both teams in the game and eventually lost both. As much as it was a good performance and good effort yesterday, heroic defeats count for nothing anymore. All that counts is progression and we didn’t make any again.
Down v Galway today was a great open game but I think that was down to two poor defences. 9 x 2 pointers(5-4 to Galway) were kicked so that extra 2 pointer was the difference. I agree that last night was more like last year. The bigger games at the end of the season are more likely to be more cautious especially while the score is close. Teams are mostly going for two-pointers when they are behind.
The new rules should make it harder to keep the ball but the extra space in Croker proably makes it easier. One thing which has been a rule in kids matche(Go Games) is not allowing two successive hand/fist passes. Very simple and encourages kick passing while making a contest for possesion more likely. I also dont like the hooter system-actually encourages keepball/running down the clock which is ridiculous, that has never been part of football or hurling but now it is a thing. If Mayo had "managed the clock" better last week they would still be in the championship. There should be more finetuning like not being allowed bring the ball back inside own 45 or if you do allow all the other team to chase you(at present only 11 can). Or why not change the rule so that teams can have any number in opposition half but can only have 12 in their own.
I think we did make progress in that some new, younger players were blooded and should be better next year. Getting Sherlock back could be huge-he can bring better freekicks and twopointers from play

Cleary is so far off other inter county managers it’s embarrassing. Think a lot of the players have done a decent job but Jesus the management are absolutely hopeless

Correct me if I’m wrong but would Kevin Walsh not be the main man running the team when it comes to tactics etc, and Cleary a selector and the face as the manager?

Similar in Kerry where it’s clear Cian O’Neill is the main man. Not that that’s a good thing for them.

Coaches get away with murder at IC level imo

When a team wins they are front and centre and are picked out as the brains behind the operation and gurus and when a team looses then its all about the manager and he not having a clue and very little said about his coach

I read comments on here that Cork played too much side to side, should have left the handbrake off, etc. I disagree - I feel that Cork balanced that very well throughout the game, indeed the best I have seen from Cork this year. That Cork same so close to winning the game (the two-pointer free dropped short resulted in a 3-point swing), whilst being starved of primary possession is testament to Cork's approach to both attacking and defending - better than Dublin on both fronts when aggregated across the entire game.

What won the game for Dublin, and lost the game for Cork, was that both teams were break-even on the Cork kickout, but Dublin won 90% of their KOs. That's a hell of a lot more primary possession. I'm not criticizing any Cork player - Dublin were outstanding in that facet of the game - I'm only observing that letting off handbrake comments aren't a logical response to Saturday's match. Plus Cork had to make shots at the Dublin posts count a lot more than Dublin had to make their shots count - 'cos the Cork players knew the Dubs would almost certainly win the KO resulting from a Cork scoring attempt.
