Cork Footballers

If i was coaching a team that had a good midfield with the old rule i would ask the midfielders and tell them when they claim the ball run at the nearest opponent ,get the free and it will be brought up 50 metres. Kerry got 8 points at least against us that way, heard Derek o Mahoney has given 14 free for this already this year.

I would do the exact same as you.

But I would also tell them to ensure that if an opposing player claims the ball, and they are not also themselves competing for it in the air, then they are not within 4 steps of where the opposing player lands or at least can get out of the way in time. That's what we are trying to achieve in the sport - that the player who claims the ball is not ambushed when he lands and instead gets a free run at it for 4 meters or whatever the exact rule distance is.

The flaw in the rule is that another player who competes in the air and does not claim the ball cannot get out of the way - he should also be rewarded for competing in the air by being allowed to tackle when he lands.

Indeed they did. One of them was certainly unfair. The one that happened right in front of me was certainly fair - the the Cork player made sure that he was accidentally-on-purpose impeding the ball winner - now he'll be rewarded 'cos the free will be right there and he was impeding to give the rest of the team time to mark up, and the free will help give them that time. The other two I'd have to watch back as I wasn't in a position to see when at the match, but I accept that the prevailing view was that they were unfair. The solution should have been to allow players competing in the air to tackle once on the ground.

This is always the way with new rules. New rules aren't there to penalize infringement - they are there to change the way the game is played. I was at an u21 match where the first half was full of 50m free advancements for various things. The second half wasn't - it changed that quick - 'cos the players were told at half-time to change what they were doing, and they did. So the mere fact that there are a lot of cases of an infringement being penalized in a certain way is not, of itself, a reason to abandon that. Again, I agree that this rule needed a tweak, but removing the very effective 50m advancement aspect leaves the rule almost toothless.

In my time following Cork we have only beaten Dublin twice 1989 and 2010 but the good news is that on both times we won the All Ireland.
Anyone think we are good enough to win it out.
If we do beat the dubs and based on the fact the Kerry will be playing Armagh do we end up with Tyrone.

Not in a million years.

Are Kerry definitely getting Armagh ?

Yeah, two of them! Great day. Great footballer. And for such a physically small and light player. His first point v Kerry in 1983 felt in that moment that it was setting a tone that day - don't die wondering anyway.

And don't be calling me John. I'm no relation, miles away, nothing to do with the club. Got some enjoyment though.

p.s. John O'Leary's a distant relation alright tho!

John Cleary and small Mick McCarthy RIP were both diminutive brilliant corner forwards. Both great balance and natural scorers.
