Cork Footballers

Cleary will have to decide does he want a shot stopper or a goalkeeper who can play outfield. It was Deane who set up out 2 last goals.
Kick out plan need major overhaul. This game is set up for Corbett and Sherlock who was at the game last Saturday.

Next weekend against Monaghan will tell all whether we can challenge for promotion or not huge game ....Div 2 is in effect a championship stakes are very high ...unlike div. 1 where all you have to do is win a few games to be safe .....

I thought our midfield was very strong all game. We won nearly every one of our own kickouts and most of their kickouts too. Our forwards were patchy and our backs were very poor. The game was there to be put the bed in the first half also and we let them come back into it and it became messy. They pissed through our backs several times and the last goal was a joke to give away. A win is a win though. Westmeath aren’t a bad side at all too from what I saw. They’ve put up huge scoring in all their games so far.

Started well but period in middle when WM seemed to win every breaking ball. Improved again when Maguire and Deane were introduced. Defence is definitely an issue. Really need more solidity at fb and cb. The two Walshs' in half forward line seemed incapable or at least disinclined at kicking scores even when they had space and time to do so.
Paul Walsh also missed an easy chance for a goal early in the game that would have put some daylight between the sides.

Westmeath are a young team and were missing their main midfielder ray connellan in fairness to them, our defence like others is being caught out by not having the same amount of cover they had previously and in a lot of cases half backs in particular are being taken on 1:1 with a forward and struggling

There’s a lot of talk of a kickout plan but every team is in the same position of having to mostly go long and hope for the best. That’s just the way it is. I saw it with Kerry V Dublin. Neither team could secure the ball for long periods. So that’s not just a Cork thing but a keeper who can go extra long, like Patton or Morgan would be a huge asset.

As for Sherlock, I can see how people might think it’s made for him but he’d have to linger outside the arc. There is more space inside near goal and it’s made for fast, direct forwards like Jones and he has shown that. Sherlock or Corbett wouldn’t be as quick off the mark.

What is noticeable though is that the scorelines in Division 1 are much lower than in Division 2. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when one meets the other later in the year.

get on and vote lads and lassies
