Cork Footballers

You’d probably need to go to very dark places for 2 winters to be able to consistently physically compete for 78-80 minutes with the top teams but as Derry are showing this year, beyond that you don’t need too much more. There are 4 or 5 reasonably good teams and everything else is dross.

The standard of teams at the top is extremely poor. Dublin team playing from memory under a manager they can’t stand could easily win Sam. As could a Kerry team so flaky they make the Cork hurlers look like Germany at a World Cup.

That's exactly it. Monaghan have been a regular Division 1 side and considered a heavy weight by some. Muskerry would have a similar pick of players. If we can get to the higher end of Division 2 challenging for promotion then you're in a position where you can be competitive with anything above you from that point.

Cleary made an interesting comment about lads breaking down when they pushed the training levels earlier in the year, basically saying it will take years to do this properly. It might do, but you'd hope with the management team in place and a settled young panel that significant gains can be made before next year's league.

Pretty good post. I don’t think it takes a huge amount to get be somewhere like where Galway are at but Kerry and Dublin are probably a step further but we did beat Kerry two years ago.

Tyrone won an AI last year out of nothing. Realistically the great Dublin team might still be very strong but they are on the wane. Kerry haven’t yet figured out how to win it out. It doesn’t take much to get into the chasing pack but the conditioning is important. Derry are proof of that.

I do think a few specialised man markers and a better keeper would push things along faster.

lads there is a lot of talk about Cork being 2 years behind in “conditioning”. We have a full time salaried High Performance Coach in Aidan O Connell who oversees all elite Cork S&C programmes supported by individual S&C coaches who are all well qualified. He is in place since Aug 2019 the year we won both minor and U20 titles. That is 3 years lads so if two successful teams at U17 and U20 were put through these “programmes” isn’t it ridiculous for us to be saying in 2022 that Cork are still 3 years behind ??

Is Aidan O Connell not having the influence that he should ? are players not listening to him and his coaches ? Are players not following their own gym programmes ? is the CCB not giving them access to paid gym facilities ? I know there is a modern gym in PUC which players have access to

I don’t know lads to be honest - I think with the footballers at least there has been an element of apathy or a lack of interest or desire to even be involved with the IC setup ( multiple consecutive poor setups perhaps ?? ) which seems at least to have been addressed this year where there seems to be a genuine spirit there. If we had all our players available ( and no disrespect to any player who played this year ) we could be looking at a starting team like this

White
K O Donovan. Shanley. Flahive
Powter Meehan R. Maguire
B. Hartnett M. Keane
N. Hartnett Cahalane. Hayes
Sherlock Corbett O Mahony

Subs : Martin, D. O Mahony, S. Ryan, Ring, Corkery, T Walsh, Cooper, Taylor, R. Maguire, I. Maguire, O Hanlon, C. Walsh, P. Walsh, O Callaghan, Gore, Murphy, Hurley, Cronin, Herlihy, Dineen, McSweeney, O Rourke & others

That’s 9 players in the 15 above who didn’t start against Dublin. We could argue all day about who should start of course but would we still be talking about Conditioning preventing us competing for the next 2-3 years if we had all these players available and they trained properly for next season ? Yes conditioning is a factor for sure but is it the main reason we went out to limit the damage against Dublin and Kerry instead of trying to win the games ? I’m not convinced. I also think management also knew they weren’t playing with a full deck.

I give Ricken, Cleary & Co credit this year for restoring some element of pride in the jersey - getting our best players on the field as a next step is surely just as important as the conditioning.

Excellent points RHB.

On Aidan O Connell and our current injury nightmare/crisis. I wonder if we have enough info to judge his performance.

How many of the current injured players, were injuried outside of his influence, i.e in club games?
If the majority of injuries are occuring within Cork training, then thats damning IMO.

However, if players are presenting themselves injuried/ broken to Cork training, its an impossible task for Aidan to improve S&C.

Are certain club coaches going over the top and overloading players? Any thoughts?

I think we are nearly there with S&C for our senior players. As Cleary said himself, it cam take a few years to build up a players body. I think one more good winter program, if the players really commit to it, then we'll be up where we need to he in terms of s&c, in both codes. They have come on leaps and bounds in last 2 years. So i think tge s&c program is working, just 2/3 of the way into the program.
